So the power went on and off a few times today and now my tivo seems to be ill. Is a hughes directivo that I hacked up about a year ago with sleeper's iso. Everything was great, tivoweb plus, etc, no reason to do more. I sat down after the storm and tried to watch tv and it said it was acquiring data....it took way too long so I told it to reboot.

Now it boots to the grey directv logo screen, says last step: acquiring information from satellite, sits at 60% for minutes, then finall right under the progress bar in tiny print i get:

state: Fast Load (4 of 10) | Net: 0 TX:2 SDID: 0x820| Networks: 0 of 4 | Obj: 3 of 4 | APG 34343(and incremenenting)/0 | 00164284d/02 00000000/00 | Lock=True

And it just stays there until I press a button to go to the menus. If I try to go to guide or live tv, I get that its re-acquiring from satellite and at 60%.

I just telnet'ed in and looked at /var/log/kernel and think I found the answer (i'll leave the other data incase someone has the same problem and searches):
Jun 9 01:09:47 (none) kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Jun 9 01:09:47 (none) kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=79244352, sector=919549
Jun 9 01:09:47 (none) kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 03:0a (hda), sector 919549
Dead drive or just errors from the power cycling? I'm guessing I need to run to best buy for a new one, pull out the original drive and the sleeper iso again.

def looks like the drive is shot. but.... DO NOT do the sleeper ISO again. I would download the 62smallmfs image and start all over using killhdinitrd. You will thank yourself.

Works better 'eh? I'll check it out! I'm also at 3.1.1c-01-2-151 I'm figuring there'll be an update form there too.....

I would guess there is a bad sector on the drive. An alternate approach would be to download the manufacturer's diagnostics for the drive and do a nondestructive low level surface scan. This should remap any bad sectors it finds.

While you are waiting for the scan to complete you can read up on removing TiVoScripts (AKA Sleeper's iso) here, (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=196162&postcount=3) and upgrading to 6.2 here. (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42325) The discussion thread is here. (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41347) As was stated, the speed improvement alone is well worth the upgrade.

Awww its official, failed advanced diagnostics, 160gig maxtor, 1 year warranty expired in Nov. 2004. It still boots so I'll try to use tytools to pull off the shows I want and read up on what to do with the original drive to get updated.

Thanks!

FYI, if one is desperate, one can try Spinrite (http://www.grc.com). Spinrite will run on just about any drive out there, and I've relied on it for nearly two decades to bring drives back to life (either temporarily or permanently).

I don't work for GRC, and I certainly don't get paid for referrals or anything. But sometimes it's the only thing that works.

Spinrite is pretty nifty although I must say I haven't used it for years. Really though I'm not concerned, I think tonight I'm going to put the factory drive back in and let it update itself to 6.2, buy a new HD tomorrow, expand to itand hack it...had pretty much everything I wanted off it extracted but thanks!
