Howdy,
I have a 120Hr RCA DVR40 I bought off ebay a few years ago. It has OS 3.1.1 on it. I want to upgrade it with an eithernet interface and memory cache but I find that requires a LOT of Linux and a lot of time. I'd also like to have 6.2 and some of the cool hacks out there.
I can take out the HD and ship it. PayPal is my friend. Anyone?

Why not try PTVUpgrade.com if you want a turn-key solution?

Because PTVUpgrade won't touch most of the more useful hacks. My laptop has no serial ports so I have to pay for someone to ghost their drive to mine.

Paying for hacks is not condoned here. This is a place for hobbyists to learn and contribute. You will have to find another outlet.

More importantly, redistribution of most of the hacks is expressly forbidden. While I enjoy a challange, coming up with an alternative to killhdinitrd, SuperPatch67, and AlphaWolf's Series 2 utilities is a little beyond my abilities.
Seriously, read the threads posted in the past 24 hours. It's not that hard to do.

Paying for somebody to do the job is fine provided you follow the license agreements and that you don't expect anybody here to provide support for somebody elses work. In other words, when you are asking questions about how to do any given thing or adjust any given hack when its clear that you don't even understand the basics of what you are doing (which is actually quite easy for the average person to learn,) you'll be very hard pressed to find any help.

Nobody's offered to help anyway so it's a moot point. I did know what I was doing years ago and I did have a tower not a laptop. I did. Oh well.

Well, there are a few issues with your first post that lead me to think you aren't exactly being up front here.

You don't need to know much about linux, just learn a few bash commands and understand the concept that bios verifies and boots kernel, which verifies and executes software. You need to take the verify software part ouf of the kernel. Thats where the initrd killing comes in.
The only way you couldn't have known this is if you never hacked your tivo before to begin with. You just bought it pre-hacked on ebay.

If the lack of serial ports on the laptop is stopping you, just go to Fry's and pick up a serial to USB adapter. Worked right out of the box for me.

It's best to pick up an old 486 desktop with a cdrom. You can probably get one for less than $50 and then there are no restrictions whatsoever.

I suggest you get at leat a P3 with a motherboard that supports LBA-48. Since new 2.2 Ghz systems are available for $150, I'd say giving someone $50 for a working 800 Mhz P3 system is quite generous.
