My Tivo Series 2 80 hour has crashed, and has been stuck at the "Almost there.." screen for ages, which indicates I need a HD replacement.

I have an HD from a new, never turned on 540080 (Series 2, 80 hr, new shape) model.

My question is this:

Can I replace the new HD from the 540080 directly into my broken 240080 and have it work immediately? Can I plug and go?

If not, then what is required (instantcake, images, etc).?

note: I don't have the original hard disk image backed up.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

The software on the 540080 (Series 2.5) is not compatible with the older 240080 (Series 2). I'd suggest buying a new drive (Fry's Electronics has 200 Gig Seagates for $49.00 after rebate). Get the proper image from PTVupgrade (or ANOTHER SOURCE IF YOU CAN FIND ONE). if the image is 4.0.1b let it upgrade to 7.1, then expand to use the full capacity of the drive.

Could you please expand more on the above (quoted)?

Also, when you say PTVUpgrade for images, that means instantcake, correct?

Most images can be expanded only once. If the Instantcake image for your system is of 4.x, it can only be safely expanded to 137 Gigs (LBA-28 limit). 7.1 supports LBA-48. So you load 4.x onto the drive WITHOUT EXPANDING IT, let the TiVo call in and take the upgrade to 7.1 (the latest software). Then expand to the full capacity of the drive by pulling it, booting from an LBA-48 tools cd, and running mfsadd. If you want to hack the system, do so after the upgrade.
