Lesson #1: No matter how comfortable you are, don't become too comfortable.
I was mucking around on my DTivo the other day with / mounted rw, doing some house keeping, and had a case of extreme newbiness.
rm -r lib
Argh! I was in / (root). I thought I was in /usr. Luckily, I had AlphaWolf's minimal 6.2 image to rescue me.
The moral of the story: Use absolute paths!
