This is not to degrade anyone Nutkase or Alphawolf, and all those who give us this superpatches to enable these features. Let me be the first to say THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. Just curious how many people use the standby button? How many **wish** it was back on the main menu..It just a poll, but any of the developers feel this as an insult. Consider this thread closed with 1,0000 Apologies...

Does Standby DO anything?
It doesn't stop the dTivo from recording the tuned stations.

I was thinking it doesn't myself, but my remote has a button for standby. I don't know what the point in standby is though, I mean if you don't want to watch it just turn the tv and stereo off.

Isn't it generally agreed that video extraction (i.e., mfsftp, tserver, etc.) is noticeably faster when the Tivo is in standby?

Isn't it generally agreed that video extraction (i.e., mfsftp, tserver, etc.) is noticeably faster when the Tivo is in standby? In my experience with standalone tivo's with 4.x,5.x,7.x, there is no change in network performance when the TiVo is in standby. Video continues to be captured in the live buffer when in standby as well. Pulling the inputs, or tuning to an non-received channel does help network performance.
DTivo's may be different, and it may depend on the TiVo software version.
The TiVo Viewers Guide that comes with a SA tivo has a page describing exactly what Standby does on the SA units (attached). Perhaps there is a similar page in the DTivo documentation.

If it really still does all this. What is its purpose..

They must be different then. My DTivo does not buffer in standby. (I assume this because the buffer is empty or stops at the point I put it in Standby when I resume and the harddrive makes less noise which is nice for the bedroom)
Also my mfs_ftp speeds increase from 14-15mb/s to 19-20mb/s in standby.
There are many posts on the Standby - Buffer Question here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=175910&highlight=standby+buffer), here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34385&highlight=standby+buffer), here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=114921&highlight=standby+buffer#post114921)
EDIT:
And I found where MuscleNerd Posted this here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=112250&highlight=standby+buffer#post112250)
On the combo units, it stops recording the live buffer, too. On the standalone units, the live buffer keeps on going even in standby.

I just use the standby button on the front panel of my DTivos. I rarely use the menu to place my DTivos in standby. I find it very useful when setting up the remote ID on another Tivo because the Tivo in standby won't respond to the remote commands unless you hit the Tivo button, among a select few others. It's much easier than having to cover the IR window on the other Tivos.

Too bad there was not a bounty for this :P
But I'm sure if any of the big players would have really looked at it, it would have been done a lot quicker then it took me. Once I really started looking at it I would say I have spent about 10 hours on it. A lot of that was working on my TuikHelper tho.
