Streaming over 802.11g

I'm having problems with choppy video over wifi. This is a common problem I know, but I'm confused about why it's happening. If I extract a show using tytool I get a transfer rate around 1MB/s. Now a 12 minute show at high quality takes about 5 or 6 minutes to transfer this way. So how is it that when I stream using vserver and tyshow, I get choppy playback? A simple calculation suggests I have double the necessary bandwidth.

Any ideas?
