All,

I've been a dedicated TiVo fan for over 5 years. I have loved my Sony Series 1. With help from this site I modded it out w/ extra storage, cache card w/ TivoNet, the works. It never failed me.

So a few weeks ago I think to myself, Hi Def, with TiVo. How can I go wrong? Heh. This thing is one of the worst piles of consumer electronics I've ever used. It is way, WAY underpowered for what it's doing. I have to push a button on the remote 2 or 3 times before the TiVo recognizes the key press. I know I'm hitting the key as the LED on the remote lights up. Makes it a little difficult to FF through commercials or really navigate at all. But the last straw was tonight, it's set up to record the Season Premier of Lost. The show's over by the time I get around to watching it confident my trusty TiVo has saved it for my HD enjoyment. As I start watching I notice that the green bar only goes to 36 minutes. Strange I think, it said 1hr 5 mins in the show info screen.

Sure enough, 36 minutes in it asks me if I want to delete. It just F'ing quit recording. No reason, no power outages, nothing. Just decided it was done. This thing has never worked right. The TiVo people need their collective asses kicked for putting this thing out. They've taken a perfect product and made it suck. Something tells me DirecTV isn't going to give me my $700 back. Maybe I should light it on fire and throw it through TiVo HQ's window, they're just down the road from me.

Am I alone here? What other options do I have for HD and PVR?

Chris

Yeah I have two of these and they are kind of a disappointment to me as well. The standard def directivos are outstanding, but the high def ones are a bit pitiful. Directv needs to force tivo to port the 6.x software to these like yesterday; only then could they ever work decently.

6.2 on the SD DTivos does spoil you with the faster menus. I had a similar incident with my new HDTivo the other day when it made it's first recording. The Tivo only recorded half of the show and then quit. I haven't seen the problem repeat itself yet and neither of my other two HDTivos have shown this problem. I also have a problem with the remote reception on this thing. I have to point the remote at it on a laser-straight line with the receptor to get it to respond. I can see the LED indicators on my other HDTivos light up when I press the remote key but the receptor on the new HDTivo seems to be desensitized to the signal unless it's in direct line of sight with the remote. I'm starting to think that the $199-special HDTivos are all factory refurbs with sub-standard performance.

I just got mine and you have me scared, is there any way to tell from the serial number if that is true?

I did notice that the box that the technician brought it in didn't look new.

If it's refurbished I believe they have to put a sticker on it that indicates it as such by law. I'd guess that most of these units have been sitting in a warehouse somewhere for a while and they're offering the special to clear them out.

It seems that the remote that came with the HD DVR is weak. I'm now using my SD-DVR40 remote with the HD DVR and it works fine. The HD DVR remote on the SD-DVR40 doesnt work as well.
