I have a sd-dvr40 dtv tivo I managed to upgrade the Hard drive on it but not shure where to start on the networking for it I just won Netgear FA120 USB 2.0 10/100 Fast Ethernet Network Adapter on ebay. Now I dont know any thing about linux so please be gentle. Can I get into the "bash" prompt with a serial cable or do I have to yank the drive out to install on pc so I can install the ftp server on the tivo box. I have a lot of stuff on the drive that I want to download to pc for edit and burn to dvd so I would hate to lose it all.
I am sorry if this has been addressed before and if any one has a good link that explanes this in a way that a life long windows user and dos could understand than I thank you very much:confused: cherryland@sbcglobal.net

You'll have to pull the drive and put it in your PC so you can install the initial hacks. If you have OS version 6.2 on the DTivo then you'll need to perform the killhdinitrd hack on the kernel and copy it to the DTivo. Once you've done that you can install the communications hacks and return the drive to the DTivo. When you've established communication you can add any other hacks with the drive in the DTivo. Check the 6.2 discussion threads in the series 2 support forum for details.
