Hi... I have a 2nd 40GB I'd like to put in my Directivo (I have a 40GB in there now)...
I'm running 6.2 HMO that is online and I can telnet to the bash prompt and transfer my ty, ty+, and tmf files unscrambled and fine.
I have mfs_ftp and tserver installed, etc....
Anyway, can I format and mount the 2nd drive through a telnet connection or do I have to pull them both and put them into a pc.
What is the best and easiest way to do this?
Thank you for your help.

Best is probably to forget the extra 40GB drive and replace the original with a bigger one. You won't run into power supply issues, heat issues, or have to worry about how to mount the second drive.

thanks... I thought that since I already have the extra 40GB drive I might as well throw it in the TiVo. The drive is sitting on a shelf right now.. Thinking of cheap $$$$$ (as in FREE since I have the drive already). But it's not worth it if it will cause problems.

agreed. I went that route adding a second drive and regretted it - - excess noise and heat. I pulled both and went to a 160gb single drive

The other problem with two drives is that you've doubled your chances of losing everything. If one drive dies, it's all toast...

True, but if you have one drive and it dies all is toast as well. Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating the use of 2 drives, but just because you only have 1 drive it doesn't mean you are safe.
To answer your original question, yes. You need to pull the drive in order to add the second drive's capacity to the Tivo. You cannot just add the drive and use telnet. Both drives need to be attached to the PC and you need to use mfsadd.

I wonder what that mfsadd in /tvbin would do???
