View Full Version : Lights on, lights off....

I have this slight recollection about there being a command (or a TCL script) that could be used to turn off (or on) the LEDs on the front of a TiVo.

What I am trying to do is turn off the green power LED on the TiVo in our Bedroom. Since it is nice and bright, my wife covers it up all the time and has a habit of using the remote to block it. I would rather just turn it off then store the remote at the TV itself.

Any ideas?

Tell her it's a night light. It's so you don't get lost on the way to the bathroom.

PlainBill, putting that shirt on your boy is tantamount to child abuse.

Hmm, for me and my SVR-2000, it's hard to tell when it's plugged in or not. The only lights are "Receiving" and "Recording", and when it's "turned off", the Receiving light lies and turns off (though it's still filling/dumping the 30-minute buffer).

I'm guessing in this day and age you have a Series 2. Is it different with Series 2 and higher? Is there a "power" light that stays on all the time? :o

If it's the same as mine you can just push the Pow--... er, wait, there is no power button on a Series 2 remote, is there? Hmm... is the Settings->Standby option still there? If so, you can always do that, and press the TiVo button when you want to turn it back on. At least, that's what I remember from a friend's Series 2 DTiVo...

You think so? He hoping to start against the Packers Sunday. He figures he'll be able to sack Favre twice.

Needed more urgently on the offensive line, I'd argue. I think Dante Culpepper is still running from the Bears' third stringers.

P.S. 28-3! Boo-yah!

P.P.S. That Vikings/Packers game is going to be a real Clash of the Titans, eh?

I'd say the Vikings need better COACHING of the offensive line. At 8 months my grandson lacks the mobility for the O line, but should be able to catch Favre without any problems.

Clash of the Titans? More like a clash of the 'not yets' and 'has beens'.

I'm, uh... still trying to figure out where this thread has gone.

Or the Clash of the Should-be's-so-why-the-heck-aren't-they's.

Lot of fans of Minnesota representing the NFC in the preseason and I doubt anybody expected the GB start.

It was inevitable that Green Bay was going to fall on their tush sooner or later. When you have an aging quarterback who refuses to admit he can't make the throws he did ten years ago, eventually things go bad.

In Minnesota's case, the reason is more subtle. I understand that aging athletes become announcers because the can't play any more, aren't smart enough to coach, and don't have the 'people skills' to make it in sales.

According to one announcer, the Vikings are $20,000,000 below the salary cap, have the lowest paid head coach in the NFL, and have the lowest paid assistant coaches. It's no wonder the offensive line leaks like a sieve - Red McCombs wasn't spending the money for players and coaches that it takes to make a first class operation.

A piece of black electrical tape?

There is no argument guys, our whole division is pretty terrible so far. Unfortunately I think our best shot is the bears! It's hard to live in Wisconsin being a Lions fan with a Vikings fan for a father.

I have a series 2 (Philips DSR704) and the lights are all off in standby. Did the original poster mention what DVR he had?

Sorry all. It is an HDVR2.

I know there are a bunch of ways to physically "turn off" the LED, but I was just trying to find one in software (other then standby, which isn't too bad an idea...)

It's a long shot, but have you tried looking at the modules loaded in rc.sysinit? I've never looked for led drivers, but the fan control was all loaded ther in 3.1.1c.

FWIW, I considered the 'need' pointless, but my wife agrees with the op's wife. So guess where that leads me?

Well at least this thread got re-railed (and what the heck, I'm the newbie here!)...

I think standby would be your best bet, because basically all it does is shut off the decoder and the LED - the system still runs and records as if it were completely on. I always make sure to Standby my S1 SA TiVo before shutting off the TV - but that may just be because I found that the MPEG2 decoder chip is the hottest chip on the board when it runs!

So, if "standby" shuts off the LED like you want it to, and you haven't been using standby, maybe you should try that. It does work the same on--... well, I'm guessing an HDVR2 is a Series 2, uhm... just by the "2" at the end. Does that work? Maybe you can program that pointless "record start/stop" button to be a Power/Standby button. IIRC, they took the Power button off the S2 remotes, didn't they?
