View Full Version : eBay'ed HDVR2, DTV won't activate
I just bought an HDVR2 off eBay with no access card. Fine, no problem, I took the card from an old DSR6000 and put it in and got channel 100 just fine. However, DTV won't activate the card, nor will they send me a new card. They tell me that I have to track down the original owner so they can see if the account is in good standing.
The iSoldIT shop I got it from has no idea who that was. So why is this DTV making this my problem? I am a customer in good standing for something like three years now and the best they can do is offer to send me a coupon for a free receiver. I don't want a free receiver, I want to activate my HDVR2.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? Should I just eBay the HDVR2 and move on? Can 6.2 be loaded on current DTivos?

You should deal with the seller. If you can't use it, it hasn't any real value to you (unless you just want to fool around with it. FWIW, I bought a DSR7000 from Weaknees for $35 (no HD or remote) and used an access card from a standard receiver that was activated with no hassles.
One more thing to try if you haven't yet--call them back again and try with a different CSR. If it's still no-go, ask for the Rentention Dept. and see what you can work out with them. You might have to threaten to leave DTV, and even that might not work.

If the old card you're trying to use is in your name, you shouldn't even have to speak with a CSR to activate it. Call 1800 directv and when it asks if you have a 3 digit code on your screen, enter 722. This will send a signal that will marry the old card to the new Tivo. Note that this only works with non-rid Tivos, so your HDVR2 should work fine.

Its in my name, but deactivated. I presume this won't work because of that? Maybe I should reactivate via the DSR6000, then move the card to the HDVR2.
I tried calling DTV tonight and had an absolute f'in nightmare round with them. One guy tried to tell me that they had NEVER manufactured receivers without RID numbers. When I told him I had a DSR6000 sitting on my floor without RID he quickly backed off that lie.

Sounds like you are getting the runaround with some crappy CSR's.
I would follow EastWind, Call customer retentions. Explain the situation. If you still have problems, threaten to go to DISH. That usually helps out. I think you are getting a RAW deal. All 3 of my HDVR2 boxes were e-bay units with no card. I did have to pay the $20 for a new card, but no big deal.

Been there, done that. Same raw deal.

Its WHO you talk to. I bought a DSR704 off of Ebay and it came with a card. Called yesterday, NO questions they just activated it.
As far as paying for a card...I WILL NEVER PAY FOR IT! THEY came up with the manner in which they want to protect their signal. I pay for the right to access that signal every month. It is THEIR responsibility to give me the access to that stream with THEIR key. You dont hook up a refrigerator and have Kenmore come by and say, "OH, BTW you need a 20 key to turn it on." The hardware is MINE, the card is property of DTV.

Well, you're not actually paying for the card but mainly just for shipping and handling. FedEx overnight shipping costs about $12-15 so tack on another $5-7 to pay for someone to stuff the card in a FedEx envelope and print out a shipping label. If you read the fine print on the back of the card you'll see that the card (supposedly) remains the property of DTV/NDS.

I have a question. I have 3 units subbed in my house. 1 Tivo and 2 non Tivo units. I also have 2 non RID tivos, which DTV wouldn't sub. Can I take the cards out of the 2 subbed non tivo units, put them into the non RID Tivo's and do the 722 trick...?

I tried it and got "you have inserted the wrong access card" message. So I called the 800 # and did the 722 option and it worked.

Has anyone called Cust ret. and requested a new card for the unit they removed the subbed card from in order to add it back to there subscription and begin using it again?

Thanks! Its the only way to add the refurbished DSR7000 I just purchased, and then try to add my exsisting on back so I dont have to throw it away and "eat" the loss.
I will post what happens within the week.
EDIT: 11/01/05 722'ed card to refurbished DSR7000, now woring on replacement card from dtv for the exsisting reciever that the card came from............ Details @11 lol How can they refuse, it WAS sub on my account so it DOES have a history! (from yesterday - about a year) lol
