I'm trying to backup my HDtivo before hacking. Here's my pc config
hda: dos drive primary master jumper set to master only
hdc: hr10-250 drive on secondary master - jumper set to master w/ slave
hdd: cdrom secondary slave jumper set to slave
booted mfstools boot disk
#/ mkdir /mnt/dos
#/ mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
#/ mfsbackup -f 9999 -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc
mfstools then reports
#/ backup failed to start. make sure you specified the right devices and that the devices are not locked.
I don't remember reading anywhere that the HDtivo drives are locked...are they?
Otherwise, I'm not sure whats going on..I've backed up standard tivo drives before without errors.

WHICH mfstools boot cd are you using? Does it support LBA-48?
Does your pc recognise the 250 Gig drive properly? Does the bios support LBA-48?
Have you tried pdisk to see if you can access the TiVo drive?
Also, you appear to be using an old copy of Hinsdale's HowTo. Most likely -f 9999 will not back up loopsets properly. If the drive has been used, it is virtually certain the backup will be missing some loopsets. Use -l 20 instead.

ya, I think it's the old pc i'm using w/ Abit BX6 mobo. I have the latest bios for it, but I don't think it supports HD's past 134g...guess I'll have to config my newer pc to backup.
Thanks Bill;)

Still doesn't work. I know my pc supports large HD's and I'm using MFStools v2.0. boot iso. I tried the -l 20 switch you suggested. I still get the error message
"mfsbackup: Backup failed to startup. Make sure you specified the right devices, and that the drives are not locked."
Any suggestions?
thanks

thanksThe MFStools v2.0 boot iso (the one Tiger released here (http://mfstools.sourceforge.net/)) is not lba48 aware, IIRC. You need to use an lba48 aware boot cd when backing up disks > 137GB.

How about answering the questions here? (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=238564&postcount=2) FYI, there are many MFStools 2.0 distros. The most common one does NOT support LBA-48. I strongly recommend the PTVupgrade LBA-48 free cd.

Ok, I used the PTV bootdisk w/ MFStools. Backed up the drive but received the following message.
Backup failed: /mnt/dos/hdtivo.bak: success
Is there anyway to verify the integrity of the drive image besides installing it?

Hi PB, to answer your ?'s I'm now using the PTV tools cd. My Pc does recognize the 250g HD and bios supports large drives. I have not heard of pdisk, but I will look into it today.
thanks,

thanks,
I also noticed that MFS tools starts the backup but then stops around 20% thru the backup and reports the error message stated in my last post.

What did you do differently? I am getting my HR10-250 this Friday and will need to do a backup before I hack it. So I'm curious.

I selected to launch to auto-launch the PTV disk. There's a prompt as the PTV disk loads. Hope this helps you.
