With a Tivo connected directly to a Win XP computer via wired usb-to-ethernet adapter and ethernet to the PC's NIC, how do I acquire the IP address of the Tivo - WITHOUT purchasing a router, switch, etc to connect them? This is prior to setting the Tivo to a static IP. Thank you.

you can install a dhcp server on your pc, but it's probably easier to just set a static IP via serial bash

If you haven't set the static IP, where is the TiVo going to get the address from? It needs a DHCP server (usually provided by a router) and unless you've installed a software server on the Windows machine, you likely don't have one avaiable to lease an address.

Wouldn't you also need a crossover cable?

Yep, you sure would.

I have all of the cables I might need: straight-through and crossovers, and also a cable that's USB on one end and RJ-45 on the other, some proprietary crap (but I doubt that one will work without hardware to convert the signal properly).
Anyway, can I set a static IP with the Tivo drive connected to a PC, or does that have to be done after enabling networking and connecting the Tivo via DHCP?
If it can't be done with the HDD in a PC, then:
When I used the Windows network setup wizard to set up my ethernet LAN, XP detected the other PC by it's Windows "Computer Name". Is there any way to detect a Tivo like this or by scanning the LAN's IP range for open ports?
Thanks again

You can set the IP manually with the Tivo drive connected to your PC. It's not optimal -- for one thing, MRV may not work properly -- but it will work. On the other hand, you've got bash, so just do an ascii upload of the NetConfig.tcl script and run that.

Er, no. That's Windows' own networking thing; totally unrelated to what you are doing here.
