Hi all

Sorry, I know the answer maybe somewhere in the forum already. I searched and read may posts but don't seem to have a clue on how to do this right. Please help!:)

I have Phillips DSR704, 120GB sleepered a while back. Everything is fine. I would like to update the software to 6.2 and possibly hacked for goodies later.

I donwload the slice update which look like this when I unpacked:

I have 2 questions:
- How do I install this? it doesn't come with a readme instruction or install script.
- Is it the right (easy) way to do? later I'd like to have HMO, tserver and tivowebplus

thanks!

Four steps: Undo the two partition monte installed by TiVoScripts (AKA Sleeper's Iso). Instructions (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=196162&postcount=3)

Find out it the slices are already installed with echo mls /SwSystem | tivosh. If they are not, install them from the slices.

Edit /tvbin/installSw.itcl and run it to install the new software.

Rehack, then reboot, and enjoy 6.2 And you don't even have to pull the drive! The following threads have more information including information on using the slices.

Hi PlainBill,

I'm reading your first step now. I got the PTVUpgrade LBA-48 ver 4.01 ENHANCED ISO too.

look like I have to use the slice because:

Directory of /SwSystem starting at ''
Name Type FsId Date Time Size
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
3.1.1e-01-2-301 tyDb 68818 11/13/04 01:44 692
ACTIVE tyDb 68818 11/13/04 01:44 692

How do I edit /tvbin/installSw.itcl ??? I mean what do I have to change?

what about: what if I want to do all this on a new 250GB. can the PTVUpgrade LBA-48 ver 4.01 ENHANCED ISO help???? does it have 6.2 on it?

thanks and sorry for being too newbies. I read all the instruction and I feel very very dumb.

The threads I referenced include specific instructions on editing installSw.itcl - I believe the first thread has the information.

The contents of your 120 Gig drive has been expanded once. It cannot be expanded again without taking special steps. Instructions are available here. (http://alt.org/forum/index.php?t=msg&goto=769&rid=0&S=7685e15b700295296be568c78ad27ee8#msg_769) This process is NOT for the novice. The $5.00 CD does not have a 6.2 image on it; if you want to use the 250 Gig drive I suggest downloading AlphaWolf's minimal 6.2 image from the eD2K network. This too is referenced in one of the threads.

Hi PlainBill,

I finally understand your first step. I'm ready to do it now.

last questions before I do this step:

after I apply the kernel from PTVUpgrade ISO, and reboot like you said. I still can access my tivo via telnet for further hacks later right? my tserver would still be working?

other steps: installing the slices and apply the super patch can be done later right?

thanks for being patient with me.

Yes, the ONLY thing this process does is change the way the 'Chain of trust (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=197479&postcount=2)' is broken. Telnet and all the other hacks are still present.

For the purpose of improving the procedure, what isn't clear about step 1?

it's clear now but again sorry for asking but on the ISO, there are 3 different kernels for S2:

- 3.1.1c
- 3.1.5
- 4.0.1a

which one should I use? is bigger is better ? should I go with 4.0.1a ?

3.1.5 is what you want for 6.2

Here is the details what I just did:

tivo:/var/tmp$ bootpage -p /dev/hda
root=/dev/hda4 dsscon=true console=2,115200 BASH_ENV=`mount$IFS-n$IFS/dev/hda16$IFS/mnt;echo$IFS/mnt/runmonte`
tivo:/var/tmp$ cd /var/packages
tivo:/var/packages$ ls
vmlinux.px.gz
tivo:/var/packages$ ls
vmlinux.px.gz
tivo:/var/packages$ gunzip vmlinux.px.gz
tivo:/var/packages$ ls -l
total 1986
-rw-r--r-- 1 0 0 2024448 Oct 29 06:17 vmlinux.px
tivo:/var/packages$ dd if=vmlinux.px of=/dev/hda6
3954+0 records in
3954+0 records out
tivo:/var/packages$ bootpage -P "root=/dev/hda7 dsscon=true console=2,115200 upgradesoftware=false" /dev/hda
Updated boot page on /dev/hda
tivo:/var/packages$ bootpage -f /dev/hda
Updated boot page on /dev/hda

and after reboot it's not comming up.

what did I just do wrong? please help.

All of the steps you show are correct. I suspect the problem started when you missed or ignored this paragraph in the "How to remove TiVoScripts" thread:

*There are many questions about the kernel version. All 3.1.1x kernels are functionally identical. No problems will occur, you aren't missing any fixes, and your performance will not suffer** when use a 3.1.1c kernel with 3.1.1e software. Similarily, all 4.x kernels are functionally identical. Use the 4.0.1a kernel with any version of 4.x software.

I say that because you asked it's clear now but again sorry for asking but on the ISO, there are 3 different kernels for S2:

- 3.1.1c
- 3.1.5
- 4.0.1a

which one should I use? is bigger is better ? should I go with 4.0.1a ?

and received this answer: 3.1.5 is what you want for 6.2

Pull the drive, extract the PROPER kernel, and dd it to partition 6.

Hi PlainBill,

sorry, I was overloaded with too much new information and somehow I missed that important part.

after dd the right kernel, it's back.

now I'm ready on your next steps.

thanks

Hi again,

I'm about to do step 2 & 3, here what I will do:

- transfer the slices and unpack, dbload... at /var/packages
- run the modified installSW.itcl script
- dd kernel killhdinitrd'd 3.1.5 to /dev/hda6 ( and /dev/hda3 too ?? )

step 4: (hack)
some questions ahead :
- what does the backdoor do? why do they recommended to remove it?
- I want HMO, do I have to use DHCP or static will be fine?

Backdoors info. (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=245727&page=1&pp=30)
HMO will work if you set the ip address in rc.sysinit.author. MRV will NOT work.
