I have the $5 cd LBA48 w/ enhancements from PTVupgrade.com. It has the 3.1.5 kernel on the cd (I think). How do I restore it. I also have the instant cake with version 3.1.5f which I can't killhdinitrd. I'm assuming I need to recover this kernel and then run killhdinitrd to get started with installing ftp, etc. Any help will be appreciated. I have spent about 8 hours today reading and I'm really lost at this point.

You should read the first couple of pages of the killhdinitrd (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36693) thread.
A very brief description: Hook the TiVo drive to a computer. Boot from the cd. Mount partition 9 on the TiVo drive. Copy the appropriate killhdinitrd kernel for your software to partition 9 on the TiVo drive. Extract it using gzip. Use bootpage -p to determine the root partition (it will be either 4 or 7). The boot (kernel) partition will be one less - either 3 or 6. dd the extracted kernel to the kernel partition. Put the drive back in the TiVo to test it.

Thanks this seemed to really help alot. Should I expect it to indicate 3.5.1 in the system information screen or still show 3.1.5f?

Typos can be deadly in Linux. And it'll still show 3.1.5f.

Ive not seen someone say extract to partition 9 before (I havent read everything, thats for sure). Is that a partition that will get wiped on boot? Essentially you are using it as temporary space?
Just curious.

Partition 9 (/var) can get rebuilt by the TiVo, particularly if it gets too full. So yes, I'm using it as temporary storage. And no, I'm not the first person to suggest it.
