I recently received a TiVO Series 2 box (40 hr) and installed a Netgear 802.11g adapter. I would like to hack the TiVO (transfer files, get shell, etc.) However, I am unable and unwilling to open the box. Does anyone have a suggestion? If so, please include weather or not it will void the warranty.

You must open the box to hack it.

If you are unwilling to open it, my only suggestion is to enjoy the machine as-is.

is there an internal server that can be used/abused to gain access to a file server (ie ftp)? is there a way to embed an ftp server via the home media application section (tivo ver. 7.2)?

If you figure it out, let us know. In the meantime, we'll keep pulling disks and replacing prom's for the initial hack.

Same answer, maybe. If you figure it out post it here please. And to answer one of your original questions, yes it will void the warranty when/if you crack it open.

In theory it is possible to create a new software package and load it via the modem, just as TiVo updates the software. To do this you will have to overcome several obstacles:
1. Create the new software package complete with authentication signatures for both the individual files, and the package itself.
2. Duplicate the handshaking protocols used when the TiVo calls 'home'.
3. Download the updated software and install it.

Step 1 is the difficult part. The kernel contains a security signature analogus to the PGP signature. Without it the kernel won't be loaded.

wow
you're here too?
go mow some yards, rake some leaves, wash cars or something and BUY your own Tivo so you don't have to open up Mommy and Daddy's.
You've pretty much been told NOPE in TWO forums now.

You don't have a clue, do you? If you want to hack a TiVo without opening it, you're going to have to develop the process yourself. While some of the people here aren't much brighter than you are, there are some real bright people engaged in developing TiVo hacks. They haven't been able to create the signature for a compiled kernel yet, and unless someone has access to a supercomputer, it's unlikely they will be able to.

Nothing wrong with being inquisitive. The approaches you've suggested have been investigated, but it's always possible you'll find something no one else has. It's going to be hard if you don't have the option of opening the box to see what's going on from the inside.

Let me retract one thing: if you find something, don't tell us about it. Once a software hack is publicly known, you can expect TiVo to close it in the next available software or hardware release. Best to keep it to yourself until TiVo has closed the loophole.

There is another solution. Have someone else crack it open. And if it is mommy and daddy's, do it when they are away for the weekend. You can have it back online in a few hours.

Getting away from the original question in this thread, you do realize that you are telling a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD (see other forum) to:

1. Take a piece of equipment he does not own
2. Open up a piece of electrical equipment with an unshielded power supply
3. Remove critical component from the item he does not own
4. Open up another computer he may or may not own
5. You know the rest of the steps.....
6. With a likely final outcome of a non-functioning TIVO and possiblly a non-functioning computer, given the type of questions and level of understanding expressed in prior posts.

Now don't get me wrong. When I was a kid I unassembled and reassembled plenty of stuff. But it was either mine or already broken!

If my teenage kids opened up my TIVO or other computer without permission, I would be pretty miffed. Especially if they broke it.

If this child wants to have a hacked TIVO, fine. However, this is a perfect situation for a parent/child project. Dad might even learn something
from it :-)

Is my intelligence being insulted? As it so happens, I am perfectly competent and am a programmer in fact. I have assembled machines from the ground up. DO NOT insult my competence in terms of computers. If I were incompetent, I would not post at all.
