DTV is sending me a replacement unit and I was wondering if it was better to hack the new system before connection to SAT cable and starting it or it doesn't matter?

Make a backup before you do anything else. Then, it doesn't matter what order you do things in.

There are two schools of though on this issue. Fixn278 has a valid point. The other school says hook it up, activate it, and make sure it works before opening the case and voiding the warranty.

Do NOT, under any circumstances, listen to someone who suggests you hack it BEFORE making a backup.
