i dared question their customer service, which is, come to this forum to ask any questions.
they expect you guys support their products, for free, i assume. something seems wrong with that.

Support thier products, well I have had no problems with them for my purchase and they give you free instructions on how to do quite a bit.
If supporting thier products is tuff to swallow, think of it as sharing experiences and recommendations. I have recommended ptvupgrade and so have many others.
As for customer service, I personnal haven't had to deal with that but many posts I've seen in the past were positive. Of course you will find the occasional negative post like yours.

first of all, i regret my intial post as it doesnt pertain to anything in the realm of "tivo hacking".
i do think of my visits here as a "sharing experiences and recommendations". but more to the point, i purchased something from someone and now i am being told to ask somebody else for support.
i have learned alot form this forum and am very thankful for having been able to glean some knowledge. but, i think ptv is taking advantage(and making money) of the goodwill on this forum.

...i think ptv is taking advantage(and making money) of the goodwill on this forum.
well maybe, maybe not. couple of things to consider
look at the banner ads here on DealDatabase, Ptv upgrade (http://partners.ptvupgrade.com/z/40/CD20/) is a sponsor. that's not cheap, course neither is the hardware + bandwith to run the forum so it sorta works out - lets Vadim keep the lights on w/o winning the lottery
TiVo Inc allows ptvupgrade to act as a source for legitimate backup images (http://partners.ptvupgrade.com/z/40/CD20/) - the ability to point to nice clean backups made things easier for developers here last year (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39354)
Ptv upgrade (http://partners.ptvupgrade.com/z/40/CD20/) also licensed a util (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36692) (developed by dd members) & gained legal standing to shutdown much of the fleabay sleaze that steal the work of forum members & funnel clueless noobs here for support
the devs are tickled a fair chunk of change went to a worthy cause (the EFF) and that now there's somebody with the motivation & means (think lawyers) to shutdown the worst of the fleabay offenders

Ptv upgrade also licensed a util
in my limited understanding of how all this works, your link says killhdinitrd is a utility that allow you stop the initrd. i am also assuming that this is a quasi work around developed by the members at ddb. you also said that ptv is a licensed utility. does this mean they also use some other to stop initrd? or do they modify the initrd to allow changes?

read up on breaking the chain of trust (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=236304&highlight=chain+trust#post236304)
killhdinitrd is required to modify hdtivo's without a warrenty voiding prom mod. it also works on regular series 2 units and is MUCH simpler than previous methods. it's pretty much the new standard so PTV upgrade (http://partners.ptvupgrade.com/z/40/CD20/) licensed it for inclusion in their kits
*simply modifying the initrd doesn't work on series 2.x units because the prom verifies the kernel AND initrd before transferring execution - killhdinitrd prevents the the initrd from executing after it's verified
