Ok I have a brand new drive. I have instant cake and all i want to do is restore a image to the new drive and then add networking so i can use it on my home network. does anyone know of a step by step guide. I have downloaded a few guides and read them but they don't always seem clear. I know dos cpmmands and have built pc's in the past so i am no novice to pc's but i am to tivo's any good ideas out there.

Check the PTV support forums. They'll support their product. After that check the STICKYs and Hacking 101.

The first step is making sure the instant cake image installs (http://www.ptvupgrade.com/support/instantcake/) correctly on your new HDD. If your tivo boots up, you're ready to hack more.

Other than that, well it really depends on what kind of tivo you own, and what kind of hacks you are trying to put on it. That's why this site usually frowns on "guides" and prefers that people learn what they are doing.

I'd love to lean more but i have downloaded three how to guides and each one does things differently and all i want is to take my new drive install the image on it which i think i have. i have not tried it in the tivo yet but it seems like it installed. then add the drivers to use the usb ports so i can record and move to my laptop to watch while i am out of the house. my tivo is a direct tv hughs sd dvr80 and the new drive i have is a 80 gig drive the three guides i have downloaded are all in one s2 utilities, walkthrough for upgrading a 6,2 and a no name one by captian video

OK, you've downloaded three guides and haven't been able to figure out what to do. Let's say you find a guide that tells you what to do. Do you REALLY think you will be able to find a guide that tells you what to do when something goes wrong?

Hacking a TiVo isn't that hard, but you have to be willing to TRY. The fact you haven't even tested the drive you 'baked' with instant cake doesn't speak too highly of your chances of succeeding.

Cheer wrote a roadmap (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43599), if it doesn't make sense to you I suggest trying TCF.

As a total newbie, can someone answer these questions about the drives in the Tivo;

1 - I have a 2 drive series 1 Thompson. I would like to replace the drives with just 1. Can I do this?

2 - Instant Cake appears to be able to do a complete reinstall of the Tivo system....is this correct? I have read in other places that I should backup the drive but is this necessary if I can restore from this software

3 - Where can I get a copy of Instant Cake?

Thanks for any info you can give me

Cheers

1 - Yes, check Hindsdale How-To (http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/index9.html). Especially the parts about a dual-drive tivo to a single drive. I believe the single drive needs to be as big or bigger (capacity-wise) as the dual-drive setup.

2- Yes. Instant Cake sets up an original base TiVo configuration on a new (or used) hard drive. It does cost money, and you need to make sure to buy the correct image for your model tivo.

3 - PTVupgrade (http://www.ptvupgrade.com/products/instantcake/). Also check into the $5 LBA48 boot CD-ROM with tools, it can be very useful.

Thanks for the info Narf

Can you (or someone else) explain where Xtreme 2.5 fits in to all this?
What will it allow me to do further than the regular tivo software?
Does this prepare a drive in the same way as the Instant Cake?

What does fixup02c.tcl do?
Does it just get rid of the nag screens to retrieve the daily update call or does it actually hack the sub?

Sorry to ask what must be stupid questions!

Thanks again

Xtreme 2.5 is for Series 1 DirecTiVos only.

I don't recall what fixup02c.tcl does. I suggest you use the advanced search options and search, displaying the earliest posts first.
