I just restored the 2.5 Hacked image from _Formula and it booted up fine. I did have a bash prompt on the serial but it was not formatting correctly.

I did not do the initrd clear thing. I do not know what that would get me. Anyone know?

It would not let me record and gave me an error#51. So I am doing a clear and delete and hopefully it will work out ok.

Damn I did not know that the clear and delete took an hour! Man!

Also 2.5 is a hellof a lot faster!

I performed the clear and delete and everything works perfectly! Even the hack works good. I still do not know why the bash prompt is weird though. Anyone?

Id be lying if I said I wasnt a little concerned about this pre-hacked image out to the public. You guys are making this way too easy, which in the long term is going to make things harder for all of us.

I believe the stty commands are not getting executed properly. When you get the bash prompt, type 'stty sane' to clear things up. Then you can change the baud rate... 'stty 38400'

For some reason executing these commands from rc.sysinit doesn't work. Maybe someone could explain why.

stty applies properties to the controlling terminal, the rc.sysinit owns bash, not the other way around. And rc.sysinit does not have a controlling terminal. try 'stty -F /dev/ttyS3 sane'

Agreed 100%. We're very under the radar here, but if we start making this so easy that Mr. and Mrs. Joe Blow can get TiVo's most useful feature (dual tuners) and the only 5th gen DTV receiver that allows for multiple locals, you can bet we show up on several radars very quickly. And I don't think we want to piss DTV off so that they start sending software updates over the satellite yet.

I'm not too sure they ever will send updates in the DTV stream, a modem makes it much easier to check the version and send data back up... but if they do, there's always a way around it.

Make a .bashrc in root with the following lines.
stty sane
stty 115200

Quick side note, DVT is being sought out by Echostar (makers of Dish Net). If the deal goes through, I would assume TiVo is next to their "to buy" list.

"DTV" but we knew what you meant :) .

Yep, it is already a done deal (GM)-Echostar have for all practical purposes merged/joined with DTV. Only thing not done is all the legal paperwork, transactions, combining of workers and systems, etc. etc. I get all the crap from newsgroup they have for media-used to dabble with still photography, thanks for asking!- blah-Its covered very well on their homepage as well. Anyhow kinda sucks as its unknown which/what hardware, software, delivery vehicles, etc etc. that will be used/kept as they dont even know of course. Thinking maaaybe a Tivo purchase but kinda doubt it as it will take couple years to sort out the current impending merger and shake out bugs and what have you, also Tivo is not that gem of a company asset wise-I only gather this from what little I read about em mind you, GM is already acquiring huge debt and all that with DTV and all to begin with one of companies already in bed with Grievo already will absorb them I think, be it Hell, they're leeched in with just about everyone -Sony, Phillips, AOL, Disney(Which means ABC and parent) etc. and on and on, not to mention the public offering in which I am sure all of us have several shares tucked away for our grandkids! Let us not forget our pal DAVE-who by the way seems to be overly enjoying their new online billing service now that its finally on-line as I don't know if I am the only one experiencing this but get a good amount of email and online notices my bill is past due well before it is even due! I tried the web payment also and soon after received several yellow nasties from western union collections in the mail compliments of DAVE with the same past due cheer only to have DTV explain to me several times via phone(after my brief period on hold) to disregard as its just the new online billing and they did in fact receive on time payment as has been the norm the last 5 years and "bugs" would be worked out of system within a couple of months! Who knows what's going to become of what but you can be pretty sure it will be a Gonzo huge mess! In the mean time I just intend on becoming familiar with both/all of the systems and thier practices, I guess? What fun! Damn, did I even have a point when I started this!? Sorry to flapp on everyone...I am better now. Happy Holidays and all that.....

_Formula:

to fix the problem with the hacked version I coppied the rc.sysinit-bak to rc.sysinit and then rebooted. Then the bash prompt came up at 9600 and it looked fine. Then I added my .bashrc with all of my variables and aliases. Everything looks good now!

Rant and Pink:
I agree with you now that I see what has been added to the hacked version I think there are some legal issues here and I will be taking this version off of my ftp (Sorry _Formula). But the clean version will stay since it has no modifications. And it does have a legitimate reason for existing since someone could need it to restore to original 2.5.

But... Just to let you guys know there are issues with the hacked version. It is not as simple as one might think. And to fix it not just any Joe blow could figure it out.

Anyway,

:)

P.S. Chance:
I really enjoyed your post but nexttime could you put some spacing in it? It makes it easier to read! especially if english is your third language! Thanks

Thats cool flipsoft... The hacked image was really just an intermediate image I was using to work on several boxes. I didn't uplaod to get credit, just to help you guys out since I saw many many posts requesting a good image. I actually put it off because I figured someone was working on it. Anyway, you can stop saying "thank _Formula". :)

Sorry I even released a semi-functional image. But like I said, I had JUST made the backup and haven't had a chance to actually test it. You shouldn't have had to edit rc.sysinit to get everything working though. If the stty baud rate had actually been set to something other than 9600, you could have matched it with your terminal prog then make changes. Maybe that wasn't the problem.

Take the hacked image down! :)

Sure Flip, thanks as always for the Flip remarks! I'll try to space more for you next time …or you could maybe just increase that text size a teensy bit on that browser of yours and pick up a new dust cloth the old bifocals while your at it! All meant only in kind constructive fun let me make clear!
By the by, being lengthy as it was I just thought it somewhat courteous to leave it spaced as is, so as not to take up an entire page for those may not be fortunate enough to be viewing on a high resolution monitor or via Television with WebTV, etc. Other than a couple of possible paragraph breaks (rarely adhered to in this chat environment) the spacing throughout was just about 100% grammatically correct according to the English Language as adhered to today.
I wasn’t aware of course that I was to have a graded test later either. As such, I was not and am not too overly concerned with typos and grammar in the chat/discussions as that is not the focus (at least not my focus-speaking only for myself of course) and also I am working usually at the same time! So take away my little gold sticky star from the top of my test paper and just give me a passing grade already okay teach? Thanks a bunch!

If I don't really care about using the bash in the future, should I be concerned. It seems from flipsofts first 2 posts, a clear and delete will make it work fine? Right? I don't care about connecting it via seriel, once I get it working.

groundhog,
Yes a clear and delete will fix the serial number information and will make your tivo work correctly. But if you are going to lockdown the Tivo i would highly suggest getting the prompt.

You WILL want clean up your tivo. The thing is wide open for DTivo to update and screw us all!

I can't even get the damm promp on 2.0! :( I'd probably be watchn TV right now if I could. I edited it several times via echo commands & wasn't using chattr correctly. I finally got to look at it in the Joe editor, and the bash promp command set was in there like 6 times. I changed it to only show up once. (/bin/bash <dev/ttyS3 >& /dev/ttyS3 &)

I'm so sick of moving the drive back and forth at this point. One thing I did realize is that I would have been done already if I was just hacking 2.0. I don't know whats going on. I'm starting to think maybe my serial port is bad(on the tivo). Then again....I've never tested it on this pc either.

P.S. is the line above the bash command suposed to read something like "rc.sysinit file is complete" ?

I was thinking that maybe that is something that got inserted the first time i booted without chattr. Maybe I should try restoring & edit it from scratch?

try putting a / before the first /dev/ttyS3.

IOW,

</dev/ttyS3 >& /dev/ttyS3 &

It was a great suggestion; reading your run-on paragraph became difficult after about four lines. The thoughts were great, but with the content of about 10 paragraphs munged into one huge block of text, it became hard to follow.

Thicken up that skin; the world may see you differently than you see yourself.

Ok trying to do this restore with 2.5 after the bash of the prom

Iam using the ICE2.5.BAK on my SAT-T60

I have the ice25.bak on my C Drive

Pri-Master = C Drive is hda
Pri -Slave = 15 gig Tivo
Sec-Master = 30 gig Tivo
Sec-Slave = CDROM with boot disk

I run ...
mkdir /mnt
mkdir /mnt/hdd
mount /dev/hdd /mnt/hdd

mkdir /mnt/dos
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
mfstool restore -i /mnt/dos/ice25.bak /dev/hdc

I get a ...
Restore Failed: Backup target not large enough for entire backup by itself.

Iam not all great at linux neither, but this worked great putting the 2.01 image on, so Iam guessing that ice2.5 was a bigger image???

should I look for another image or what can I change in my command line to fix this?

You probably got a single drive backup (40Gig). You need to find a dual drive backup, or get a bigger A drive and use the 30 as a B.

If I'm not mistaken. The A drive image cannot be made smaller than what it was at the factory.

I think your right :(

I need to find someone that has a backup of a Sony SAT-T60 that has the two drives
30 gig, and a 15 gig
