I am *really* sorry for all the problems I've had getting this posted! I started to invite everyone here to drop by last night and pick up a copy from me in person, but my wife had already made other plans...

Sorry for the problems but IBP seems to have screwed-up the file once again! I downloaded it myself and it is now corrupted as before...
Try this link...
ftp://tivo:tivo@quake.watchmybeaver.com/dsr600025xtreme
I will have a new, fast ftp site to share by tommorrow so check back...

FINALLY!!!! IM DOWNLOADING IT - IS THIS A DREAM?
heh.. j/k thanks for all your hardwork and I'll let you know how it goes.

NOTICE **** NOTICE **** NOTICE **** NOTICE
All I ask is that anyone who gets a *verified* good copy and has fast access to a usable ftp sites, please post it there for me and post a link to the file on this board...
I don't know what the problem is but my cable upload speed is *fubar*! I can download @ 250-300kbps, but it took over 4 hours for me to post this on the IBP server!!! I'm in the process of trying to post it at quake.watchmybeaver.com, but it's reporting is going to take over 3 hours, so I'm sure someone will be able to beat me to it...
Again, let me apologize for the delays but hopefully it will spread to ftp sites so everyone can now get access to it...
The Sony SAT-60 version will follow soon... (By tomorrow hopefully...)
Enjoy...

Thanks for useing the mail server. Its a great project that never took off that much. Wouldnt it be nice to have you tivo mail out data direct from mfs. I can't wait to see how the replay4000 will email such large files. Would be fun to use IBP for tivo to send mail. wget mfs and import it.

As you mentioned, is there also a stand-alone version coming for those of us that don't have a CD burner?

Yes, but with my current suck-ass upload speed, and the problems I've had trying to distribute this to everyone that requested it, I might suggest if you're in a hurry to go ahead and download the .ISO via the IBP link above. Then, goto WinImage v6.0 (http://www.winimage.com/winimage.htm) and download a 30-day trial of the WinImage utility. With it, you can "open" the .ISO just like it was a .zip file and extract my DSR6K25X.MFS file (in the /DTIVOIMG directory) from it for stand-alone usage...

I love this stuff! This is too big a file for my 26k dialup. So I logged in to a server at work and I am down loading it there on a T1. I'll pull it off the lan on to my laptop when I get to work in the morning. If any one wants (or if no one minds) I post it on morpheus and make it available on a T1 nights and weekends. this might work better for people like me with slow connections. Thanks Surgeon!
I just installed this into my hughes unit and I get stuck at the powering up screen. Any ideas?

I believe it's gaining in popularity 'cause I'm seeing more and more posts about using it... I thought this approach might solve the bandwidth issues, as I'm sure it's on an extremely fast host. The only thing I hate is that they've cut the file's maximum retention times from 10 days down to 5... 10 was a *lot* better, esp. in this situation... The other wierd thing (to me anyway) is the friggin length of the url for the attachments. Whatsup with a retreve-attachment url of almost 1000 characters???

I can't address this issue, since the *only* legitimate use for a hack like 'fixup' would be by our Canadian brethren who can't sub even if they wanted to...
But if anyone North of the border should discover any coding sections which trigger this type of functionality, all I ask is that they *DO NOT EVEN MENTION IT* here in these forums... This CD is sure to get enough negitive attention from the TiVoDiVoS, so *PLEASE* don't try to be clever and post about any 'backdoors' that may/may-not exist in the DirecTivo25Xtreme versions... Be *cool* and keep that type of information to yourself and let others have a little fun hunting for their own Easter-eggs...
And that's all I have to say about that...

All that I can suggest is to double-check the jumpers on your drives... This has been tested on 8 different systems and on my 'hack-box' unit in at least 10 different configurations of single/dual, large/small, small/large, used/bare drives.

I have the same problem. I got the Tivo upgrade screen, and then it rebooted. Now it gets stuck on the Powering Up screen, then reboots.
I'm using a single drive (40GB) image, and the drive is jumpered as master. It's a WD drive.
I just put the original dual drive tray in the 'upgraded' machine, and it is booting normally. So the PROM didn't get fried. It only stayed on the first powering up screen for like 5 seconds. So maybe I do have the 'speedboot' PROM?
So the reboot problem seems like an issue with the HD image. I don't have a serial cable, so I can't telnet in. Any suggestions?

No. I did get the expected reboots. But I waited about 10 minutes after the 'Tivo is upgrading your software' and it constantly reboots every 2 minutes. I watched it do about 5-8 reboots on the 'powering up' screen.

Hmm, I get an error when trying to use the image.
Here's what I see:
Starting restore
Uncompressed backup size: 1365 megabytes
Restore failed: Decompression error..99%) (1325.91% compression)
Cannot continue -- processing aborted.
Some background information:
- I downloaded from the HTML link listed in the first message in this post
- Tried to restore on a 'Quaxtor' 80GB drive (a Quantum drive now sold by Maxtor after the merger) on hdb. Got the error.
- Tried to restore on a Maxtor 40GB drive on hdb. Got the same error.
- Downloaded image again, reburned CD
- Still get the same errors
- The compression ratio is more normal (less than say 100%) during the restore, it gets to 1325% only at the end
- I am running on a dual PIII/700 system (Abit VP6 motherboard), not overclocked, 384 MB ram, 60GB IBM hda (HPFS Win2000 drive)
Anyone have any ideas, or other tests I can try?
Thanks again to surgeon, for his hard work on this! You're the man!

This *is* a strange one, as the error indicates that the compressed image is corrupted, yet it can't be because .zip is not reporting any errors when it's un-zipped... (That's the main reason it's zip'ed to start with, for the crc verification.) And other's are reporting that this part is working fine on their systems...
Only thing I can suggest is to try a different computer if possible 'cause it sure seems to be a hardware issue, possibly with with your IDE system of cdrom reader... Let me know wht you come up with...

Are there any logs on the drive I can look at? I don't have a serial cable, so I can't manually update the PROM and then try your image.
I would say the img is corrupt. It is getting corrupt somewhere when making the ISO. the zip d/ls fine, the ISO burns fine. The image is corruot before it is placed into the ISO.
This is probably why others are reporting that their units are not booting up. They probably did not see the error during restore and just went ahead and placed their drive in the unit.
Can any of you who are having complaints that they are not booting up confirm that you had 100% restore?
Thanks,

Maybe make dsr6k25x.mfs available for d/l and we can try that to check.
I am reporting the same error as Autodestruct, gets to 99% and "Restore failed: Decompression error..99%. I will burn another copy off another machine and give it a try.
I will report back.
Autodestruct i think it is your cd i had the same problems the first time i tried it , reburned cd with good quality cd and no problems with install
Now the real problem why does mine hang on booting up ( Welcome Powering up ) forever removed drives, reformatted, reinstalled, same problem ???? non quantum, both are maxtor if this helps ????? stuck

Hmm, ok, so I performed a few more tests:
- Changed the CD-ROM drive on my original system, from a TDK VeloCD 12x Burner to an IOMagic 48X. Had the same 99% issue.
- Used a different system, different motherboard, etc, had the same 99% issue.
I'm using FujiFilm 80min CD's.
Can others that had success or no success report on their configurations? Maybe we can find a common element here.
What size drives are people using for the their restore targets? Where are you backing up to (hdb, hdc, etc). Where is your CD located from (hdc, etc).

hda = DVD-ROM with CD inside
hdc = 40GB Original drive, jumpered to master
AMD K6-2 with 3Dnow
64MB of RAM
Creative DVD-ROM (older model, not sure which one at the moment)
Made both 74min TDK and 80min PNY Black Diamond (should not make a difference)
doing restore again, just to make sure (this time, no DirecTivoMad utility so that I can see if just the 30G version works or not...
UPDATE 17:11 EDT
The unit rebooted just fine, if I only ran the image restore, NOTHING ELSE. It gave me the bash prompt without a problem either (remember folks, it has been set back to 9600 baud).
It might have something to do with the was the PC wants to look at hdX right after you do a restore. It would not mount the partition hdX7 until I rebooted the PC.
on a side note, am I the only one that noticed that 2.5 takes more time to actually show you the picture of live tv then 2.0.0 does. (about .25 sec)
I've had a little different experience with the image...
I burned the ISO at 4x, booted the system and get a mount error when logging on (can't mount /dev/). I presume that it is trying to mount the CD but seems that the command is incomplete and perhaps that section of the image is missing on this disk.
When viewing the disk from W2k, it appears to be compete and indicates that it is like 159.90 MB. I can see the 25xtreme executable and all of the sub directories, so the image appears to be complete.
I am now trying to reburn the image, this time at 1x just for grins and giggles, and will see if it comes clean this time.

I was just successful. Everything worked fine. I downloaded, burned at 8X on a cheapie CD-R, did the modifications with my A drive on hdb. This was on an old P133. I did DTivoMad and now have 126 hours with a 100 + 40 HDs. It called in and registered my lifetime sub.
My only problem, Surgeon was with the booting of the CD. I think this disk is based on Nuboot6.iso which used a large RAMDISK. Unfortunately it did not run on my old machine with only 48MB RAM. BSnelson, the originator of Nuboot6, sent me a Nuboot7 with a smaller Ramdisk which worked fine on my machine. It requires to mount the CD drive as mnt/c to work. I can send it to you to see if you can use it to get around the large ramdisk problem. That way I can return the RAM I borrowed for this project.
Anyways, if I understand this correctly, all I have to do is to restore dsr6k25x.mfs using any version of mfstools and I should have all the functionality you have incorporated except the built in utilities on your CD, which would be reason enough for me to want to have your disk work on my setup.
Anyways, I'm off to go to Rat Shack today to make my serial cable and then I will be ready to venture further into these fantastic adventures like getting the locals.
If anyone wants to verify the images with checksums, MD5 etc. let me know. I guess my image is good.
Thanks, Surgeon, strong work.

Are you able to get bash? You don't need it for fixup, but I was just curious.
If you want to do the fixup thing, follow the instructions by Neutronflux in the stepbystep file.
I burnt the image at 8x and 16x and off 2 different machines. I get the same results, 99% and then dies with the "Cannot continue..." message.
I tried both hda (cd) /hdb (40 gig) and hdc (cd) /hdd (40 gig) both with the same results. I mounted it up anyway and tried it.
The amazing thing is that it is working.
I would guess we still have to run fixup02, or was that in this release?

Items tested on v1.0 of DSR6000 2.5 Xtreme image:
If you use the image by itself, so far it works. (30GB drive image)
If you use the DirecTivoMad beta 4 option, it fails at that point.
Items left to be tested:
Using 25extreme to restore and BlessTivo (NO DTMad)
Using the utilities by themselves (without REBOOTING after each step)
Using the utilities by themselves (with REBOOTING after each step)
anyone want to take some of these on?

yngdiego: Have you tried to restore to the 2.0.0 image to see if you can boot properly? You may have had a problem updating the prom. My system was already updated for the speed fix. If your prom is still the original prom, then you will have the reboot problem.

I used an old HD with 2.0 and it works fine on the machine which reboots with the xtreme 2.5 image. So I am guessing xtreme doesn't properly update the PROM. Any solution surgeon?
How can you verify what ver. your prom is at? Mine is bash-2.02..just wanted to make sure this is what it should read for 2.5.
is there a quick easy way to verify? from bash or from booting up the Tivo?

I had the decompression error also on a 16x CD/RW. I changed to CD/DVD drive and had no problems.
I am going to wait until I hear more about the reboot problem since this is the new DSR6000 I replaced since my last box died after the prom update to 2.5.
Thankfully I gently removed my warranty sticker so I was able to replace the origional "A" disk and return to CC as DOA.
SUCCESS...
Upon further review, the mount failure was due to the fact that I have SCSI, not IDE, CD Rom drives on my box. I mounted the burner on the mount point /var/log/mount (or whatever it was that the CDROM alias was pointing to) and was able to run everything fine after that point.
The restore went well, reached 100%, and the TiVoMAD process appears to have been successful.
I'm getting ready to fire it up now to verify the process.

Guys,
All I can tell you is to double-check your hardware configurations on your P/C and try again... I just did a fresh download/burn/install onto a machine my brother-in-law brought over (which was still factory sealed) and had absolutely *NO* problems at all... It was an original 30GB+15GB which we replaced with 2 100GB western digitals. It now has v2.5Xtreme and 185 hours of recording time!
My testbed P/C is an ABIT BE6 MB/500MHz PIII/256MB/ASUS 50x CDROM/VooDoo 2000 Video system -- about as generic as you can get...
The whole DirecTivo 2.5Xtreme v1.0 upgrade procedure, from removing screws on unit to setting up dual tuner input and watching TV ---> less than 20 minutes!

So what explains my, and others, reboot problems? everything else went A-OK. But the damn thing keeps rebooting on me.
even though mine only got top 99.94%, i think most of it took. I plugged back in the Tivo. I got the announcements on there for the dual tuner thing. I am able to get to a bash prompt. I thought I would check for sure that the eeprom got flashed. I decided to reflash the eeprom again. It came back and told me updte not required. I can only assume then that I have the current 2.5 prom on there.
I have noticed that I am showing an Account status of 2. I think I should be something different than 2 right?
Well, if worse comes to worse I will restore from another image and plunk some stuff in manually.

I can confirm that the image works, the update is intact, and after it's initial setup and reindexing of the database it is good to go.
Now I have to bite the bullet and reposition my dish to fine tune the signal strength, but other than that it is ready to rock.

This CONTINUES to happen to me on my setup. When I have done some research, I have found this piece of information on Hinsdale's How-to page.
Restore Mfs Tools backup image to your new large upgrade drive using ONE of the following commands:
(This is assuming you have connected your destination upgrade drive as Secondary Master)
mfstool restore -zi /mnt/cd-rom/tivo.bak /dev/hdc (Boot Cd users command)
This will take even less time than the backup and will report drive progress and results. It has been reported that on rare occassion Mfs Tools will stall on the final "cleaning up restore" operation. If this occurs, and the cleanup operation is not completed within 10 minutes, you can attempt to break the script or power down your PC. It is of undetermined cause and has no effect on the function/completeness of the restored image.
If this is true, then why do we need the TivoMAD utility on the 25Xtreme restore? Since your (surgeon) 25Xtreme CD uses this command, you do not need to use the DirecTivoMad 4 as MFStool will automaticly restore the file to the large drive sizes. Any comments people?

Unfortunately, I do not have another machine to pull apart to test this with. I will follow up with Trevor since this WILL affect me in the future when I upgrade the A Drive to something bigger.
In the meantime, is the assumption about the MFSTools correct?
If it is, then why do we need to run TivoMad after we restore an image?

(btw, without the TivoMad util is reports 77 hours. It shoud report more then that, based off of previous blessings on an identical system, not hacked at all)

Ok, so I was able to get the image to restore. As someone mentioned before, it looks like it was a CD problem.
This is somewhat odd, as I burned two copies and both failed, and I've never had CD/media/ISO problems before. (P.S., I used Nero 5, in case thats a common link)
Here's what I did:
- I saw when the restore was at 99%, the system was constantly accessing the CD (as though it couldn't get a good read).
- I used IsoBuster on the iso image, and copied the .mfs file to the hard drive
- I used MFStools to restore the image, and I got it to successfully restore to 100%.
BUT, it still doesn't seem to be working on either of my HDs. I get the Welcome, Powering Up, it reboots once, then goes to Welcome, Powering Up, and stays here indefinately....

I'm getting the same reboot problem. I have a WD30.0 gig hd and it is stuck on the Welcome Powering up. It reboots every minute, minute 1/2.
The image said that it wrote correctly. I am going to rerun the image this time without TivoMad
Right now I do not have a B drive installed.
A is a WD 30 gig.

Was trying desparetly to get fixup etc, to work.Had all but that working. But after the last mods ,no boot. This ISO saved a lot of heartaches! I have single 40 Gig Q, DSR6k.I selected yes to tivomad (because HD was over 30 Gig).
This was first Linux Boot disc that recognized my SCSI Contr & Cd Roms.Although i used my Plex IDE 12/10/32 to boot from.
I think i might just unbox the OTHER ONE now!!

I'm stuck at the 'Welcome. Powering up...' screen, and it does NOT continuously reboot. (reboots just one time). It doesn't load either.
This is without running TivoMad.
If I >do< run TivoMad right after restoring, I get the 'Welcome. Powering up', a reboot, 'Welcome. Powering up' 'A few moments more' or whatever message, and it hangs here. It never comes out of that screen, never reboots.

Mmm, that crow tastes good!
Anyhow, I was able to successfully restore and use the image. After having the image not load due to the CD issue, I.. err.. jumpstarted it by enabling DMA (which, while not producing a usable image, goes much more quickly). Anyhow, after copying the image via IsoBuster, and restoring by hitting enter (as surgeons txt clearly details.. twice), the process went smoothly.
So, in order to help others with the same issues
- If you can't restore the image completely, it's probably a CD issue. Try to burn another image, or use IsoBuster (search Google) to extract the .mfs file to your harddrive. Use mfstools (or edit 25xtreme) to use this as the input file.
- If it restores, but doesn't seem to work, are you SURE you just hit enter at the boot prompt?
Hope this helps.

So tell me... Just how much bigger is your 30GB drive than the 30GB I refered to in that prompt???

oh i got it to restore but to run with 2 drives not yet
If i do dtivomad after i do restore it hangs ( welcome ....) but if i take the newly restored image try to run it first, it hangs ( welcome ....) after this i use dtivomad ver4 , put back in tivo and it boots and loads i've tried this several ways but this is the only way i can get it to boot and load.
Now if i can get the second drive working !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are absolutely correct! Using DMA/NOSWAP options will improve the restore portions as MfsTools will work fine either way, but the following DirecTivoMad/BlessTiVo utilities *WILL NOT WORK CORRECTLY* in these modes...

Newbie here. Got it working on the first go around. I have a few questions:
1. Towards the end of the process it asked/estimated my total gig as 140. I clicked no and it went through to the end. My total should be 120. How can I verify?
2. What do I need to do, "If anything", as far as the dialing goes.
Tivo account status: "not set up, 2 days left." No dial tone etc.
I have also noticed a delay in the sound. Comes on a few (5-10) seconds after changing chanels.
BTW: I made a serial connection and am ready to go in if needed!
Thanks in advance!

Surgeon,
1. On one of your preivous threads you mentioned the Sony T60. Will this ISO work with anything else besides the DSR6000 or is it product specific?
2. Can I use this in conjunction with emulation for a total entertainment solution. (If this is out of bounds please ignore) I am a legal subscriber, (Too chicken to cancel) but I enjoy all of the locals and PPVs as well...
3. How does this impact my ability to add a second hard disk?

We really don't do a lot of flaming around here, as most all of us are really laid back kinda guys...
1 - The current release is for a Philips DSR6000 and will *NOT* work with a Sony unit due to the differences in their remote-control codes. I *should* have a Sony SAT60 version done shortly... (Maybe by tommorrow...)
2 - The v2.5 software as released by TiVo "locked" the software so it could not be modified to add additional features like TivoNet and the like. The 25Xtreme releases 'automatically' removes these restraints when it's installed allowing various mods to be made. I'm sure if you do a little searching (via the search link at the top of this page) you'll certainly find the particular subject you're interested in...
3 - Basically 25Xtreme is just like the regular release you'd get from Tivo, with a few options like a 'Bash' prompt and the ability to modify the software any way you desire. In short, you can add a second drive at anytime you desire...
Welcome aboard!

You could be having issues simallar to those I am having. I believe that I could be experiencing a problem due to the fact that my system will not recognize drives 40GB and higher natively. I have to tell it that there is NO drive in the system and it works fine for every option, except TivoMad. I am going to try this theroy out on another system at a friend's house later on this week. Other then that, I am stumped as to why my system will not do things correctly the first time.

Not the download, not the hard drives, Not the Install code

If you will bear with me so I can get started I will appreciate same and attempt to repay the kindnesss with contributions.
I downloaded the 25extreme zip file and attempted to burn it on a CD using the Adaptec product to prep the CD. It appears to burn correctly but when I place it a test PC (windows 2000 loaded) I can not make it boot from that CD. I am therfor at step -1. On a PC you need to have the CD made to be bootable by loading it with the proper boot files. Is there someting akin to that I am missing? Do I just load the windows files to make a bootable CD?.
No laughing please, Any help will really be appreciated.

The ISO image you burnt is already bootable. The problem is with your computer BIOS. Either your BIOS doesn't support CD booting, or it's not in the boot order. Check you BIOS for boot order, and make sure CDROM is before the C drive. You don't need to do anything to the CD-ROM once it's burn to make it physically bootable.

Isn't there anyone out there willing to offer some advice????
Any idea what could be causing this problem?
Is a 120G drive too big or none compatable?

If someone could throw me a bone, I promise to replay it 10 fold in helping others.....

The 120 should work fine...
Try setting the 120 as Secondary Master, and the noname CDR as Secondary slave. Set your BIOS hd settings to NONE.
See if that helps, then report back your results.

We are all willing to help, but your problem doesn't sound like an easy fix...
Bottom line is, I'd suggest trying the CD in another system to verify that it boots, even if that means taking it to CompUSA or Office Depot...
If the CD is fine, then there's a major hatred between Linux and your PC. Try stripping your PC down to just the bare neccessities,(mb,cpu, memory, simple vga card, cdrom reader and NOTHING else) and see if it now boots... If not, try replacing your vga card with a different one...
All these steps are just basic PC problem solving techniques...

Well well well......You may need to see if you can update your BIOS with a latest BIOS file for your PC......I got a similar problem before with Linux.......if you can not have the latest file......try to reload the BIOS by doing the Load BIOS default or Load BIOS Optimization........and then disable the necessity setting for your setup. They do the "beep and reboots" because seems like they have some kind of "memory" or "PCI address" setting error internally. They seem to happen sometime with AMD CPU....

I am just not sure of what the steps are to make a bootable CD. I have the iso image. on a hard drive. I have winimage. Do I just copy the iso file from the HD to a blank formatted CD in its compressed form? Do I extract what is on the iso file using winimage and put it just the way it is in the iso file onto a blank CD? Do I unpack the directories and extract them to the CD?
I would think that the CD neets to be built with certain files in very specific places. How does one do that for Linux. I know how to do it for a PC floppy.
Any help appreciated.

AAADiver:
1) Does your BIOS see the entire 120G drive? Verify this in BIOS setup.
2) Remove the 120G and try booting the CD.
Wait...
You say the primary master is *disconnected*?? How? To act as master, it *must* be connected - unless you jumpered the 120G as master....
Keep the primary master connected - and check it's jumpers. Some drives have a different jumper config between standalone and master. Recheck jumpers on slave 120G - be sure it's set as slave.
Not familiar with surgeon's file - yet. If based on Kazymyr's CD, it expects hda to be a DOS drive - and doesn't byteswap it.
So you *must not* put the 120G as primary master (which means you must keep your other drive connected as master).
While MFSTools knows about byteswapping, and works either way, you will have to run other utilities to take advantage of the bigger drive - and those utilities must have byteswapping enabled - and byteswapping only occurs on hdb, hdc, and hdd (if they exist).
hda - primary master hard drive
hdb - primary slave hard drive
hdc - secondary master hard drive
hdd - secondary slave hard drive
FWIW:
These assignments are absolute - don't shift with different hard drive configs. ie: the alpha designators don't assign in order like DOS (glad we don't have to worry about extended partitions either):
If you have two hard drives - one primary master, one secondary master, they are labelled hda and hdc resp.
While the same two drives configured as primary master/slave would be hda/hdb.

Mayor:
This may be the only board where there's no forbidden topic..
I'll try to answer some of your q's.
1) Click your way through Menu - Setup - System Information. Scroll down to see recording capacity. Should probably read about 7/8 of your drive capacity in Gigs.
2) Search for "fixup02c.tcl" on this board. Read and read for ways to have it automatically execute from time to time.
As for delay. There is always a delay, since the Tivo needs to dump the old buffer and start a new buffer on the drive. Because DTivo first writes to the drive, then reads from it to display the show, there is always as much as 1s delay behind live broadcast (and channels appearing). It's by design.
Now if you're saying that you see the picture first, then the sound comes on after a further delay - you got me. On my unit(s), the picture and sound come on together - after the buffer delay.

I have a delay with the sound it comes in 5-10 seconds after the picture. I am using the digital optical out to my A/v receiver.
I will look for fixup02c.tcl and figure it out. Hopefully...
System information says I only have one day left. Then what?

Optical out... not using mine yet. But I've heard similar complaints - especially with Yamaha receivers. Consider it normal.
After your free time runs out, the Tivo functions are disabled. Can still watch TV - but no record/play, etc.
Fixup cures this, but must be run at least once every 30 days. Download it, put it on your Tivo, run it. Then spend time reading threads related to fixup - like how to make it run automatically.
We're probably not too good with step-by-step how-to's on this board.... But the info is here. Digging into Tivo requires some basic understanding of Linux. If you're perfectly comfortable with command mode DOS (C:>) - then learning Linux basics to navigate the Tivo will come quickly.

If you have the bash prompt working from a remote computer, search for the posting from Neutronflux that has his step-by-step guide. It is very easy to follow.

Someone beat me to it but...
No, don't need drive on PC... but that's one way to get it on the drive.
Of couse, the proper way to maintain service is to subscribe and let Tivo call home...
Anyway - to run fixup -
You *will* need:
1) A serial cable between the DTivo and a PC. You can assemble one, see this thread:
http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4686&perpage=15&pagenumber=2
2) A comm program to talk to the Tivo.
3) A "bash" prompt from the Tivo.
4) Upload to the Tivo using "rz" on Tivo, and sending ZModem from your comm program.
5) chmod the script.
6) run it from the bash prompt.
As you may have surmised, playing this game will require some Linux knowledge - basic will do, and some compter and electronics know-how. In general, this board is not the greatest for beginners - but it has absolutely the best hacks.
Here's a good start:
http://www.tivofaq.com/hack/faq.html
Also, check the AVSForum. There's a *huge* Tivo board over there with links to several step-by-step how-tos. But you won't see the same hacks as you see here.
PM from here - or create a new thread, as this is getting way off topic for this thread...

Thanks Tron. I really appreciate your time. I know this sounds stupid. What is the bash prompt? How do I get it. What does it look like? I got the how to. I have the serial cable made. My laptop is what I plan on using. It is running 98/2000 dual boot. No Linux.

Just wanted to give my 2 cents. For starters THANKS so much Surgeon and everyone else that has contributed to this board. It is great to have a place like this to come to for help. I will say I am one of the lucky ones that got everything to work first time right off the bat. Procedures in doing so. I bought a new system. I subscribed to Tivo. I went ahead and did all the updates manually first just to be safe. Then after all was said and done, I backed up my drive with no problems and then put the Xtreme image on. No problems, no errors. Except the one little error that is mentioned that it is supposed to be there! :) sorry had to throw that in there so you do know people read what you put in the scripts hehe! Anyways booted the drive back up in the Tivo unit and it did exactly what it was supposed to, rebooted once then loaded some stuff, then rebooted again, and then built the database and all was good. Then I went ahead and forced a dialup and all updated fine and showed me subbed again. So thanks for the great product and ease of use. I could have figured it out in time with all the WONDERFUL I might add help that is on this message board but saving me the time and steps sure helps especially when I have to tend to my 6 month old baby girl! :) So kept me where I could play with her and not have to research too terribly deep! Anyways have a serial cable on order and the TivoNet adapters for my next project. I plan on continuing to subscribe, I figure 10 bucks a month isn't too bad for what it offers, but I don't want to leave my phone line hooked up. Where I run the system I don't want to have to run a phone line down there. So my first goal is to get the fixup02 working which there is enough documention on it now that hopefully I can grasp that! And did want to say a hint for all those that have such a hard time burning ISO's. I have ALWAYS used a program called DiscJuggler for burning ISO's and cd copies. It has never failed me and does a wonderful job of it. No need to mess with the RAW options etc like in Nero. Don't get me wrong I own Nero too it rocks but I use it for my Bin/Cue cd's and DiscJuggler for everything else. You might wanna check into it, they have a trial version and see if it solves a lot of your burning problems.. I apologize I don't remember the website for them, but just do a simple search in Google or something and I bet you will find it. I just wanted to give my thanks for a great product and look forward to more dealings with all of you later!
Thanks Surgeon and everyone else.

Surgeon, Tron, & Chipster -
Thanks for the expert advice! Really do appreciate it. I'm not home yet but I think I see the porch light :-).
My reboot problem appears to be an AMD K6/2 bios issue. I updated the bios, stripped the machine, used default bios settings and believe it or not, I still had the same problem  so I gave up on this machine and went and borrowed a friends.
Unfortunately it's a 166 Pentium w/only 32M of memory. It failed to boot off of the CD until I also updated it's bios. Finally booted but now I'm getting a Kernal Panic: Out of memory and no processes to kill.... They aint making this easy for me.
I beleive if I bump the memory up, I should be in business. I'll let you know but again, I really appreciate all the work you did up front Surgeon and the support from you guys as well.
Thanks again!

Would someone be willing to send me a boot cd with this 2.5 xtreme file. I must admit my transfer rate is 2.9 and everytime I hit 8 hours I get logged off the server. I tried also going to emptyhearts.com and that site seems to be under construction. I would be more than glad to pay for the materials. Please let me know. I see no way of doing this any other way, I have a T1 here at work but no CD BURNER and IT is iffy with me downloading stuff. I would love to try this file out.

Perhaps you've simply got a bad CD burn...
Download the Kazymyr Boot CD ISO, burn it to a CD - at a slow setting - and see if this boots. If so, your problems are elsewhere.
Get it here (about 9Megs, pretty small):

Hi Chipster -
I'm 90% confident that it's simply a memory constraint. I was able to boot the CD on my laptop and get all the way to the second prompt before I aborted as I didn't know if it would cause any problems here.
On the desktop with limited memory, it boots, prompts me with the "boot:" prompt and then runs through a whole string of commands. I see that it finds all my drives including the 120G (yea!) but then it crashed during to the memory error above.
I'm going to slap another 64M into it so it has a total of 96M and I'm hoping that this will do the trick.
I'll let you know tonight. Thanks again!

midnightmaraude, et al,
If you are one of those poor soles that MUST use a SLOW dial-up, and get cut off at the 8 hour mark, go to a site (such as the quake site mentioned on the board - it will let you Resume if you get cut off in the middle of a D/L) use a leecher (just to get the info) to get the file name and dir that it is in [ or ask someone :) ]- Note: if you HAVE to use Go!Zilla for the leech, please try and use a different - "NO SPY'Ware - program to actually download the file (Such as DAP) . With the info from the leach, use your downloader program and start up the download. At this time, go find something to do till about 8 hours go by. At that point (when you get disconnected) just restart the D/L and go do something else until either it is downloaded - or another 8 hours has gone by, keep doing this till you get it. Of coarse, you probably could have called a local DSL service, had them install your new DSL, and surfed for 2 hours before you would get the file D/L'd by this dial-up method [ lol :) ].
Long story short - You can do it, but do you WANT to.

Hi Neutronflux,
Surgeon is working on it, see this ===> http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4831
rkn2903 - Just go out and buy a new drive or two - there are some really good deals on large drives, and you can now add one or both large drives to make a really huge TiVo, if you wish. Figure out how big a TiVo you want, then get the drives accordingly.
For me, 80 - 120 hours is more than enough. Others want 200+ hours. I'm not sure of the impact of the extra resources on the hardware design, so I don't think that I'd press it to the limits myself (although others are doing so with great success!).
Enjoy!

I've had nothing but problems trying to get a good burn from DSR6000-2.5XTREME.ZIP I've used both Adaptec and Nero 5.0 and neither will boot from three different readers. Plex, Yam and Toshiba.
However, Hoochster left a message on this thread saying he has had great success with DiscJuggler by Padus. (www.padus.com) it has a free trial version for D/L. To make this short I down loaded this free software pkg. and gave a shot @ burning with it. Problem solved.... all cd readers boot this iso fine. Hope this helps someone.
Tortola
You've got some serious problems... I burned it with Adaptec with only a minor problem the first time through, on a 8x burner.
Be sure that you are selecting the option for Mode I, not Mode II XA, and if you are having trouble then select 1x speed.
I did one at 1x, and another at 8x, and they both work just fine.
Good luck,

There is a definate memory requirement for this ISO. My system would restore the backup, but DirecTivoMad beta4 would not work correctly with only 64MB of RAM. Once I bumped it up to 128MB (yeah, CompUSA and Free PNY Memory!) I found that it works correctly. According to what I have seen, you MUST have AT LEAST 96 MB of RAM for everything to work correctly. Since I only have 64MB sticks of RAM to test with, I cannot confirm this, but I can confirm that it DOES NOT work right with 64MB, but it DOES work with 128MB.
Thanks to Surgeon and all of the others that have written to help me over the last weeks!

Surgeon,
I don't see the full zip file on emptyhearts anymore. Is it still there?
Try DSR6K25X.MFS on emptyhearts.com. It is not the iso cd image just the MFS backup image. This worked for me. I wouldn't use Netscape Save Link As... because I believe it treats the files as text. Use IE or something else.
Then use the Hinsdale How-To (http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/) to restore and TiVoMAD if your HD is not 30GB or you have a B drive. Just a workaround until someone uploads another.

Ok I have read till my eyeballs ache and I have downloaded so much stuff, I have a certifiable mess on my hard drive...
I am confused with the overflow.....
Does Extreme2.5 give the ability to run scripts and other interesting things on the DTivo, when it wasn't previously possible? (only on 2.01) Or does it create something else?
I see messages pertaining to zeroing out the init....
Is the 2.5 file already "zero'ed"?
I assume if that is yes, that the new system created will allow fixups and other scripts?
I want to use my DTivo for a bunch of things one, to not have to pay an extra $5.00 to both DTV and Tivo for what I already pay them $105 per month for (i have 3 receivers and 2 tivos now) and I would also like to get the Florida Locals (all of them) and I have seen that it is now possible to 'edit' to do so.
Extreme just sets up the board.. I have to move the pieces.. right?
Oh and thanks for the newly posted link I am in progress of d/l ing the new 2.5
Xtreme makes all possible :D... If you are at all knowledgeable in the subtleties of the TiVo hacks and the disciplines of linux and tcl, then poke around and explore the image once you've applied it... Surgeon has done a commendable job on his build.
Enjoy!

Hi all,
Thank you Surgeon for your hard work and for sharing with the community. It's people like you who keep this hobby going!
Could somebody please post a checksum for the file 25Xtreme.iso of a known good ISO? - I have a version downloaded (downloaded as an .iso file) and I'd like to make sure it's good before i burn it and try this out.
A CRC in Winzip would be great (File/Properties on the .iso once winzipped), or a checksum from pdsfv (should come up with the same value I think).
I'm sure this would be useful to others as well as myself if somebody would be kind enough to do this.
BTW, I'm waiting for my DSR6000 to be delivered by UPS so I can get busy. I have a LOT of Linux experience (back since the 1.x kernel under Slackware) including kernel hacking, and am greatly looking forward to contributing to this community :)
Thanks in advance for the checksum,

OK I need some help. I have read and read until my eyes popped out, put them back in and read some more. I downloaded an image of extreme2.5 a couple days ago and burned it several times.
I hooked up everything to my pc, the 15g and 30g tivo hd, and my dvd drive as the primary master and directed my pc to boot to the bootable cd. After 6 different cds and many hours of frustration, my pc will not boot to the cd. Tells me can not find operating system.
I can't find any system files on the image cd. I tried making a bootable cd using easy cd creator and then adding the 2.5 image. The cd would boot up but the 2.5 program would not run.
I must have a corrupt download or am I really lost here? I tried the new link today but can't even get to the download from there.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Can someone point me to some step by step instructions for using this 2.5 image? I am a mod at another site so I know how irritating it gets to answer the same questions over and over.

Laid_off_sick - You really need to review this thread and the method that you are using to burn the image, as well as your computer BIOS setup. The ISO image has the boot files on it, and it will boot into linux when it works. Make sure that you are burning as Mode I
ORiOnKiLeR You haven't tried very hard... The post that Surgeon made a couple of pages back works fine. Also, I uploaded the image to the ftp site that Surgeon mentioned, ftp.emptyhearts.com, so it is readily available.

Laid_off_sick - Sounds to me like you are trying to use EasyCD Creator to create a data CD and are 'draging' the .ISO image into the data area... This WON'T work! If you do a directory of a CD you've made and it just shows the .ISO file on it then this is the case. You must select the options to "create a CD from an image file", then make sure those settings are set for Mode1 9660 format...

Hi Everyone
First, let me introduce myself. The name is Newbie, bloody Newbie.
Well, after EXTENSIVE reading and a new pair of glasses, I have finally worked up the courage to open my DSR6K.
I downloaded and burned the CD, put in a WD 40gig drive in the ole puter, booted the cd, and followed the prompts. I was blown away that everything actually worked the first time!! My deepest thanks to Surgeon and all the other great people on this forum for the hard work that would let an ***** like myself actually do this without the need of a fire extinguisher. Totally awesome work!
One small question, though. The "extra" features Surgeon mentioned, do I need to have the drive in the computer at the bash prompt, or in the tivo itself at the bash prompt to invoke them. I did not quite understand that. Heck, I understood only a fraction of this anyway. Other than that, everything else works fine.
Anyway, I felt compelled after weeks of reading, to post and shower all the masters here with the praise so richly deserved.
Thank you all. :D
The 'features' are unlocked - period. Regardless of whether you access locally or remotely, they are available. The only main difference is that it is much more convenient to access remotely, as you don't have to shut it down and pull the drives.
Enjoy.

I think you have it backwards. Obviously the new member used the search function, found the relevent thread and tried to follow the instructions contained. Isn't that what we tell people to do? If the REAL moderators thought the thread belonged in the newbie forum THEY would have moved it. The member you responded to didn't put the thread in this forum. Your problem is with Surgeon (if not a Tivo god a near god) who started the thread or with the moderators who chose to keep it where it was started.
Unfortunately the FTP sites had to remove the images due to pressure from tivo. You might post a request on TCF, I think someone there might give you a link to a private FTP site.

Wrong. The original thread was not started so that "yamaha" could beg for an image.

The original thread was started to supply a link for an image. The very title of the thread is "THE LINK..(And this one really works!!!) TRY READING BEFORE YOU POST your "canned" rude reply. Yamaha was looking for an updated link since the links in the thread don't work.
Yamaha obviously searched first, found the relevent thread and tried to follow the instructions given. Really not much else you can ask him to do without posting for more information.
Like I said if the REAL MODERATORS have a problem they can either delete or move the thread WHERE THEY THINK IT BELONGS.

Wrong, he was begging for an image. As there are no public image sites anymore which could have been linked to in a reply, his request could only belong in one place: the NEWBIE forum.
Use a little logic next time before you argue with somebody who is smarter than you.

NO He was asking for an updated link. Take the time to read the first post of the thread, Surgeon was giving the "offical" link for his program. The "offical" link is history and yamaha was asking for an updated link.
Puzzled why you are attacking a new poster who obviously took the time to follow your advice and tried searching first.
Logic would indicate asking the question the "offical" thread regarding the tool. If I had a question on Sleeper tools I would ask it wherever the moderators allowed the thread to be placed.
I see you didn't put your "offical image begging" thread in the newbie section not did you ask to have your thread moved.
By my definition you're rude, by your definition you're stupid.

NEW RULE: don't reply to a thread that is over 2 years old and expect to see an answer from the original contributors.

NO personal attacks will be tolerated here.
It is obvious that this discussion has run its course. You're wrong as usual, now suck it up.
