Hey, i worked for a long time and got my tivo monted correctly booting 7.2.1 software. i went to set it up at my grandad's house (i never watch tv, so i'm giving it to him) and realized that he had digital cable and wireless internet. i just got a tivo remote in the mail to replace the universal one i've been using. anyway i have two questions.
1. if i go into the setup and tell it that i have a cable box, it should work fine right? i won't have to do the guided set up again. this is really more of a verification. i'll find out soon enough. i had to wait for the tivo remote because my universal had no thumbs down button, and therefore i couldn't access anything dangerous. ha ha.
2. more importantly, i bought a netgear WG111 v.2 and it didn't work. i know that tivo's are finky about usb wlan adapters, but now that i've got it hacked and all, how hard can it be to add a module into the kernel to support it? yet i can't find any threads about this. i am a little confused about what the backport is, but it seems to be unstable anyway. should i just return it and pay extra for a "tivo compatible" one off ebay?
thanks for the help,

For wired connectors, the Netgear FA120 seems to be popular around here. Not a lot of shops carry it, so you'd probably need to order it from an online vendor.
For wireless, since you seem to have a standalone unit, Tivo has released their own wireless unit ( see tivo.com store (http://www.tivo.com/2.7.1.asp) ). The base problem with the wireless stuff is that it really isn't as "standard" as should be. My experience with NetGear is that they're set up to be "easy" and when they work, great -- but they don't seem to do any actual compatibility testing or certification of their own stuff and when it doesn't work there's no hope of a fix. Usually, Netgear doesn't seem to even certify their Windows drivers, its that bad.
Anyway, all of the wireless gear has some sort of issue with Tivo (or any non-Windows platform) because the companies don't like to release detailed specs nor source-code for their drivers. Some intrepet soul has to create a working linux driver pretty much from scratch, and then others might try to get it working under MIPS for TiVo. Most of the threads I've actually followed seem to fall back on a good wired USB-Ethernet adapter and then hook up the wireless pod to that dongle.

I have seen the list of the ones that will work, but i can't find a good place to buy one. I'm tired of trying to win auctions for them on ebay, i just want a store. The problem is all of the ones that work are early models. I can't find them for sale anywhere, only things for sale are the later models. Is there a specific one that is easy to find, and preferably cheap? specific site would be nice.

I think your best bet is to buy the TiVo Wireless-G that they just announced this year (I think). I know it seems pricey, but it will work OOTB and it will be supported by TiVo. I think I heard that they tweaked it to get the best speed for MRV also.

I looked at the site because I didn't know that they were out of stock. Info there states:
This product is currently backordered. Expected ship date (subject to change) is 3/6/06. You may place a backorder now, and your credit card will not be charged for this product until it is available. If you order additional products at the same time, those products will be charged and shipped in the standard time frame.
