Just to add more to what fixn278 said...DirecTivos have no encoders. They just capture the satellite stream as is and write to disk. They have no analog inputs and no NTSC or QAM tuners. (The only non-satellite capture that any of them will do is using the HR10-250, which will record over-the-air ATSC (digital/hi-def) signals.)

This can be done. Sell the DirecTiVos, then use the money to buy a stand-alone TiVo.

Their value depends on what they are. If they are 35 hour Series 1 without cards, they aren't worth a lot - but you should expect to get at least $10 for each of them. If they are Series 2 systems they would be worth somewhat more to anyone who did not get in on the DirecTV $15 DirecTiVo deal and REALLY wants a hackable system.
