On my server computer which used to be my main computer when I originally hacked my Tivo, I used to be able to play my extracted TY files right in WMP.
I haven't been on that computer in quite a while, and went in today and it will not play them anymore.
What I want to do is put the codec I need on the computer I use now, but since the old one isn't working, I can't figure out what is wrong. WMP just says I don't have the right codec installed.
Using G-Spot doesn't tell me what codec the ty files are in, and I haven't found out here.
I also cannot play any of the extracted mpegs I extracted. Those just crash WMP, where I used ot be able to play them no problem on the old computer.
Anyone know what needs to be done to get it to work?

They're mpeg2 files, so you need an mpeg2 codec. Not sure if there are any freeware ones. Since WMP is crashing on MPEG2 files (and not just TY files), the MPEG2 codec is likely your problem.
Installing something like PowerDVD might help you. Personally, I avoid WMP as it's broken in a number of ways.
Also, you might re-install TyShow for your ty/codec problem.

Thanks Chris, I installed a free mpeg2 codec I installed on the web, and they both play now.
The mpeg files (which were extracted with Tytools also) are stretched vertically.
The TY files look fine though.
Anyways, thanks for the help.

Depending on the resolution of the extracted videos, stretched may not be unusual. DTivo SD videos are 480 x 480 which, when played via WMP, will show up as stretched vertically (just as an SVCD video would).

I ended up unloading the codec, and played the video again and the resolution was perfect. I had problems with jerkyness, but after trying a few different codecs, I found one that plays them perfect now.
Thanks again for the help.
I have a similar issue - the ty files will not play, but if I change the extention to mpg they play fine. Why would that be?

Sounds like you either need to re-register ty file type or you have an association problem.

The .ty extension isn't properly registered. There's a .reg file you can import that comes with TyShow, or you can just manually associated the .ty extension with your favorite media player.
EDIT: I manually associtated it and now it opens and plays fine in WMP.
Thanks
