If I could just get the proper buzzwords to search for......

I have a Series 1 Standalone TiVo with a Turbonet card and a larger HD. (But it's been quite a while since I attempted any TiVo hacking.) My wife has a Series 2 Standalone that is still using the phone line for updates.

Right now both TiVos are in the living room. You can only watch one at a time. I have a TV downstairs that I'd like to be able to use with Tivo but I don't want give up the ability to use the upstairs TV. Both TVs are next to 100mbps Linksys routers. I would like to move the Series 1 downstairs but still be able to somehow network it to the Series 2. I am very used to using the TiVo remote, otherwise I would just read up on the FTP threads and use my laptop downstairs. Am I wasting time hoping to find a way to 'network' a Series 1 to a Series 2? If not, could someone just give me a couple of keywords to search on? Or maybe I should replace the Series 1 with a Series 2?

A Series 2 SA TiVo is very easy to network - just plug in a supported adapter and connect the adapter to your router / switch / hub. I BELIEVE you can then have it get guide updates over the internet.

You will NOT be able to use MRV; the Series 1 does not support it.

Maybe it's time for me to get one of the inexpensive Series 2 units I see out there. Thanks.

I will read up on MRV. If it's fast and bug free I may go that way.

Make sure you get a Series 2 (TCD240xxx), not a Series 2.5 (TCD540xxx).

MRV is actually a Tivo feature ("Multi-Room Viewing"). It's very fast, and very bug-free. Simply put your Tivos on a network using USB-to-Ethernet or USB-to-Wireless(*) adapters. Pull up the Now Playing list on one, and at the bottom you'll see the names of your other Tivos. Select, and you'll see the shows on the remote Tivo. Just select, play, and away you go. Couldn't be cooler. :)

I believe if you're not hacking the Tivos that you have to set things up through Tivo's website, but don't quote me on that; I only have DirecTivos.

If he's only interested in MRV, he won't need to hack and the Series 2.5 units should work just as well.

Thanks. I do want to try some hacking so I guess the cheap ones I've seen aren't going to do the job!

They are easily hackable if you have the skills to replace the prom (32 pin surface mount package). If you do, LOTS of people here want to talk to you.
