Is it possible to detect which IR codes have been pressed and trigger other activities on a 6.2 DirecTivo? As in, detect if a key is pressed and fire off a script that does something. If so, how does it handle IR sequences beyond what it might see from the standard remote?

Search the groups for "router_plus" and/or "chanflip".
I've built a program that intercepts remote codes a displays a box on the screen with all the stored caller-id info from nccid. I plan to add in more options like the old TiVo Control Station
