View Full Version : HR10-250 off-the-air-only hack?

I'd like to be able to use the HR10-250 exclusively as an off-the-air dual tuner PVR. There are problems with this: (1) You can't get Tivo service without the Satellite, (2) you can't buy tivo servicer for a DirecTivo without buying a Tivo package and (3) Even if you could, it costs money.

I'm not trying to violate forum rules. I know we can't talk about how to cheat Tivo or DirecTivo out of their content. However, I seem to remember a hack for other Tivos that allowed them to get programming/guide information from one of the free services via the ethernet port. Has anything similar been done with the DirecTivo?

So far I just haven't seen another OTA PVR that I liked as well.

Back story:
I have an HR10-250 that I purchased for that unholy launch price from Circuit City.

After living at the same apartment complex with my satellite for more than eight years, a new tyrant landlord came to power and commanded that all satellite policies be enforced. Since mine fell out of the FCC's legal coverage, mine came down.

I did this and had this $1000 dead weight. I know that when I move in a few months that I won't be able to receive the new HD channels on it because it doesn't have the new decoder. So, I've considered selling it but I've been lazy and reluctant.

While thinking about this, I realized that I didn't use the satellite channels very much anyway. If I can get good HD content off the air, this would be about 80% of what I'd want to watch... and I could just do other things (go to a friend's, wait for the DVD release) of the handful of shows that aren't on a major network.

But I have to have timeshifting. I simply cannot live in the world of trying to be home at a certain time to watch a TV show. ...And Tivo had the best method of timeshifting with the best user interface. Surely there is a way I can still use this hardware that I have paid for in a legal way without needing to buy additional content from either DirecTV or Tivo?

Thanks a lot.

Sorry, but there's no legal way to get guide data or activate the Tivo features without both a paid DTV subscription with the DVR service. You should be able to use the HDTivo to receive OTA broadcasts but you won't be able to record anything without a paid subscription.

Are there not any mods for the HD unit that are similar to the one you posted at the top of this post?

The purpose of that mod was not to allow you to get local guide data without having service.

Er sorry, it's actually the Tivo Canada stuff that allowed you to get guide data from an alternate source. Unfortunately the Tivo Canada website has shut down saying Tivo will be sold there officially or something (true or not, I don't care).

I know there are alternate guide data packs available for HTPC PVRs--it's just hard to believe there isn't a hack to use one of those. I don't even need all the channels to line up. If there's a manual conversion even, that's ok--I really only care about four channels (CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC). I don't care if it's the local affiliate data or the national data either since I don't care about local news or Price is Right reruns.

Be that as it may, it's considered theft of service here and not discussed.

You might consider selling the tivo and going with MythTV. Here is a link (http://wendy.seltzer.org/mythtv/)to a site that has a HD configuration. Aside from the hardware it is free. You may get close to a wash dollar wise with the sale of the Tivo.
