How can I make my DTivo automatically go into Standby at a predetermined time.
My DTivo is just too noisy, I would like it to go into automatically go into standby at 11:00PM every night.

Standby won't make it quieter -- all standby really does is shut off video output. Box is still running, still recording scheduled recordings, hard disk is still spinning, fans still running, etc.

Two possible solutions are putting the TiVo on a timer, turning off power at 11:00 PM (a REALLY BAD idea), or learning to sleep with the noise. Yes, it is possible to sleep in a room where a TiVo is operation. I and thousands of others do it every night. My wife's only complain is it isn't loud enough to mask the sound of my snoring. I, on the other hand, know better than to mention the sound of HER snoring.

My DTivo is significantly less noisy in Standby. The noise I an referring to is coming from the HD. Is there a way to enter Standby using bash?

The way I've dealt with this is by setting up a daily (nightly) repeating manual recording of 5 minutes at 11PM on channel 99 (which does not exist in my cable service).
At 11Pm the tivo changes to channel 99 but records nothing because there is no video signal. The HD light goes out and the tivo is nice and quiet the rest of the night.

That's so simple it's brilliant! Thanks for the tip!
Of course, for DTivo users, we'll need to set up two; channels 0 and 1 work marvelously when I tune them manually so that's what I will try.

DTiVos stop filling (and playing back) the live buffers in Standby, so that is three video streams no longer active. You betcha that calms down the disk drive. SA TiVos don't do this.

Allow me to be more clear...
Cant you set up a cron job that reboots the server at night? I always thought it ends in standby at the end.

If you mean reboot the Tivo, then no, it doesn't automatically standby.
