I thought I'd report this success using 2 WRT54g's. My main one (connected to DSL modem) is v5(!) and the bridge is v4. The v5 router is stock firmware and the v4 is using Tofu. Here are the instructions:

I am using WPA (WPA2 doesn't work for me with this bridge setup, maybe someone can enlighten me as to why) SSID is hidden on both routers.

Cheers

Have you guys tried powerline networking?

I have been using the Netgear XE102 for quite some time and am very happy with it. You can get 2 refubs for less than a linksys router. Best of all you won't get the latency + drops involved with wireless networking.
