I need some help and i typed my problem so far.

I have my windows xp drive as primary master, and the original tivo as primary slave, then the fat 32 drive, the larger one to replace my old tive drive to secondary master and the cd rom as secondary slave. I started the cd rom and the weakness software loaded, then the sofware ran andt it said trying to mount, tried 5 times then said no cd rom found sh-2 2.05b#, cd rom is obvious there since it booted the CD. I am using the weakness cd to replace one drive , i have tivo 2 SA 540040. Can you please help? suggesions?

set the CD as secondary master and put the upgrade drive as secondary slave. alternatively you could disconnect your xp drive and use the upgrade drive as you primary master and boot from the cd. Have your FAT 32 drive as secondary slave. If you were backing up a Tivo drive It would dangerous to have the xp drive present in the first place, especially since you don't need it.

I will try that. You stated alternatively I could your xp drive and use the upgrade drive as you primary master and boot from the cd, Have your FAT 32 drive as secondary slave, SO , should I put the original tivo as secondary master?

Is this right?
primary master, cd rom
primary slave-none
secondary master
secondary slave-fat 32 drive, which will be my new tivo drive

Where would I put the original slave, as primary slave?

You're missing a key point. You need a FAT drive to store the backup on. Yet you're trying to use the FAT drive as the new TiVo drive. Get a small FAT drive (or partition). 2 GB is plenty. If you want to go without the place to store the backup, do a piped backup | restore (dangerous since you won't have a working backup).

I so need a fat 32 drive as primary master
cd rom as slave

another fat 32 drive for my new tivo as secondary master
original tivo as secondary slave>?\\

is that correct?

ewBut he already has a Fat32 drive to store the backup on. Its his new drive. After he creates the backup he can boot Windows and copy it to his NTFS drive or burn a CD. Then he can boot off the PTVupgrade CD a second time, mount his NTFS drive read only and restore the backup onto the new drive for testing.

Actually the piped idea is pretty good too and wouldn't require any Fat32 whatsoever. I mean if he's just going to replace the old drive like it sounds and is willing to just stick the old drive on a shelf as a backup then there's not really a huge need to create an additional backup.
