Using the instuctions found in the thread on recording music channels on DirecTivo, I can now record the XM stuff, using TyTools, I can pull the recorded stuff to the PC side; but now just what is the best manner to convert the audio only to PC usable format such as MP3?

Get tytools to create an MPG, feed that to DVD2AVI, create a "project", collect the resulting WAV and feed it to Audacity, output as an MP3.

Is the on-screen title/artist information saved with the video portion of the recording? From reading the forums it sounds like audio-only. Wondering if you could OCR the video, have a list of what you recorded, and use it to tag your files. You'd also have to analyze the waveform for quiet points or something to split the audio exactly.... Has anyone tried this? Assuming it could be automatic you could leave it running, generate hundreds of MP3s and then pick the ones you want.

i tried using tyes to convert audio from audio only stream i.e. xm recording and even though i named the resulting audio stream .mp3 it apprently is not an mp3 as nero will not let me use that audio to burn audio cd.. any ideas?

The resulting stream is an elemental stream (mp2). Audacity will convert mp2 to mp3.

I'm in the UK using a series 1 so this may not work for you but here's my process.

1. Download the ty through MFS_FTP
2. Use vsplit to turn the ty into an mpeg
3. Use ffmpeg to turn the mpeg into an mp3

after you use tyes to convert the ty into mp2 you can use itunes to burn audio CD... aletrantively you can use itunes to convert the resulting mp2 into aac (m4a) fairly quickly and transfer to ipod (or motorola SLVR in my case)
