I have a Series 1 Dtivo GXCEBOT. It has 2.5.2 installed via 25xtreme and the 2.5.2 upgrade about 9 months ago. Last Tuesday (or about then) it stated rebooting for no reason. I can watch about 10 minutes of record or live TV then it will just shutdown. I have read the treads on the 3.5 upgrade but I'm not sure that is the issue. I have a cache card in the box but I am only using the ethernet part. The cache part displays a driver error on boot up. It has been this way for a while but the Tivo still worked fine so I just left it. I have tivowebplus, ftp, telnet and xplus installed also. About a week before the reboot started I got a message that I needed to have my tivo call in to continue service. I reapplied the fakecall patch and everything was working again. I have the Tivo option on my DTV account and my other Tivo which is an unhacked series 2 is working fine. Any suggestions on how to get this working again without re-installing the software?
Thanks

You say it runs for a few minutes before it reboots... What does the system info screen say about what software version you're using? Does it say anything about "Pending restart" or anything else? (Sorry, its been a long time since I worked with a Series-1)
If you've been running system 2.5 all this time, I have a hard time believing a system download would cause a problem. I could be wrong but it seems so unlikely. If telnet and ftp still work, you could try grabbing copies of the log files.

System Info screen says Software Version: 2.5.2-01-1-001
No mention of pending download.
Working on getting the logs. What logs should i be interested in and where are they located. Thanks for your help.

I'm not familiar with xPlusz on the Series-1, but this keeps showing up over and over, within a few seconds of each other:
Wed May 17 06 16:12:56 mvchannels not activated, attempting to cleanup
Wed May 17 06 16:12:58 xPlusz exiting, rc=0
This could just be a process which repeatedly looks for some activity of some sort, although why it keeps dumping into the log file I don't know.
Then we have two processes (in this case 170 and 174) which appear to keep grabbing memory:
<166>May 17 23:17:22 tcl[170]: Tcl created pool of 1458176 bytes
<166>May 17 23:17:26 tcl[174]: Tcl created pool of 1458176 bytes
I don't know what the normal function of a Series-1 is supposed to look like, but if it really is grabbing more and more memory, it might explain why your tivo is running for 10 minutes and then crashing.
Is there anything in the /var/log/kernel log file?

Could it be a heat related issue, maybe the fan isn't working.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will pull the cover off tonight, re-seat everything, check the fan and look for the kernel log.

Re seated everything. Fan is working. The kernal log is empty.

At this point, it would probably be useful to rig up a serial cable and capture the console output, especially up until when it reboots.

is it still rebooting? If so try
new power and ide cables
check power supply voltages
clean parallax cable or solder in a a real cable. Not fun, but effective.
run each, by it self until it returns /dev/hdx clean
e2fsck -y /dev/hda4
e2fsck -y /dev/hda7
e2fsck -y /dev/hda9
Search for fsfix, I forget correct way to run it.
next clear and delete guide data + thumbs NOT Recordings if you want them.
mfsassert -please (check this one, but I beleieve its correct)
if it recovers and still reboots try reimaging.
next try a new or known good drive.
Next a large hammer or shotgun

Ok, Got back from vacation last Thursaday. Pluged in the TIVO and got a green screen saying serious error. I left it like that for a few hours and when I came back it was working. I thought that may have fixed it but the reboot started again after about an hour. Finally I tried the clear and delete everthing option. So far it's been working for 2 days w/o reboot. Just sucks to have to add back all the season passes but it's worth it if it's fixed.

Next time (and, trust me, there will be a next time), back up the season passes and channel prefs with the Channel Prefs and Backup modules of TivoWebPlus. Makes the C & D much more pleasurable.
But before you do, be sure to delete any inactive or expired season passes; often they're the source of the problem, I'm told.
