I previously owned a TiVo Series2 DVR that I upgraded with a 120GB. If I took that hard drive out of the Series2 would it operate without modification on the DSR7000? Would I have to reformat the hard drive using a different tool?

If it came from a Directv box, then it will probably work - give it a try - worse case is that it won't boot. If the drive was from a standalone box, it will require modification. If you need to re-image the drive, check out ptvupgrades' instant cake solution - it's really simple.
