Will adding telnet and FTP programs to a S2 SA screw up the built-in home media options of a series 2?

When I browse to the IP of my Tivo, I get the "Congratulations! You’ve successfully connected your TiVo® box to your home network, enabling a number of exciting new Home Media features" page.

I'm just wondering what the effect of adding telnet and FTP to this box will have and perhaps a few tips as to the best and safest method to get the right versions of telnet and FTP onto the S2 SA. (I have a Tivo TCD 240080).

The purpose of this is to apply superpatch-67all-NutKase-1.2.tcl to the S2 SA. I've successfully applied the patch to a Dtivo (Hughes DVR80) and the Dtivo appears on the Now Playing list of the standalone and the standalone appears on the now playing list of the Dtivo. However, neither DVR can actually exchange recordings with the other.

Reading messages I know I need to run the superpatch to disable encryption on the SA, but what I'd like to know is the best method to get it there and the correct program versions of telnet and FTP to use.

Hurm.

Installing telnet and ftp will not harm the HMO/MRV options that are included with the standalone Tivo. You can compromise the box by installing a killhdinitrd'd kernel to the active kernel partition. The telnet daemon is already on the box; you just need a line in rc.sysinit.author to load it. If you install Alphawolf's all-in-one toolset, you get an ftp daemon (same one you have on your DTivo), which again you can call via rc.sysinit.author.

You should be good at that point.

You also need to replace /sbin/iptables to turn off the firewall as described here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=204669#post204669).

Crap, I always forget that part. I'm such a DirecTivoHead.

My standalone is running 7.2.2b-oth-01-2-140 and I do have the PTV LBA48 4.04 boot disk which has a 7.2.2b-o killhdinitrd'd kernel. I just want to be clear that I should not use this kernel in this process, correct? Just stick with the existing kernel?

Also, since I have the problem of getting Alphawolf's toolset onto the standalone just the same as getting telnet and FTP there I still feel like I'm in a catch-22.

I'm assuming I'll have to install the toolset from a PC, put the drive back in the tivo, reboot the tivo then FTP the superpatch to the tivo and run the superpatch and then do the replace /sbin/iptables procedure, reboot and I'll be good to go?

Is there a good walk-through somewhere to install the toolset? And do all the tools work with the 7.2.2b-oth Tivo software okay?

No walkthrough.

Yes, you SHOULD use the kernel on the PTV disc. You need some kind of killhdinitrd'd kernel to break the chain of trust.

You will have to pull the drive -- no way around it. While you have the drive pulled, you can move the kernel over, along with the toolset. You also must make the iptables fix at this time, and create your rc.sysinit.author. (You can copy over the superpatch script at this time too if you like.)

Drive back into the Tivo, boot up, and you should be good to go to ftp things, telnet, etc.

All the tools we've discussed will work fine with the 7.2.2b-oth software.
