Yes, I realize its in extreme newbie territory..

I did all the setup, running ftp and telnet on the tivo (HDVR2). I did the 4 byte no-crypt patch, rebooted and recorded a show after.

Now.. how do it get it to my pc in a friendly format? If I knew the file I could FTP it, but I suspect its in some weird ty-format?

I installed tytools, but it wont connect to my tivo (I suspect I need a tserver or something running which I dont). Is there somethign that allows me to ftp and convert to mpg/avi/divx or anything?

Sorry for the dump question, been reading threads here all day (most helpful).. But kinda dumbounded on this..

Yes. You can either install the tserver that comes with TyTool and use that to extract, or you can install mfs_ftp and use that. Either will work.

Does both require special software installed on the tivo? Is there a install-thread-for-*****s? :)

Tnx!!

Yes, both require special software installed on the Tivo. No thread for dummies -- you need to read and read and read some more. Start with the stickies in the Newbie forum. In particular, start with Captain Video's Tivo Hacking 101.

I think the dime dropped on how it works.. I wasnt aware of the 'hidden' mfs shares for video storage. I transferred files after setting up mfs_ftp, but have somewhat limited luck playing back the ty files. mediaplayer 10 with the codec plays some, not others and loading into tystudio produced some nice 'fatal errors' on tystudio.

trying w/ tserver / tytool next I think...

If you want to play on your PC, first try Media Player Classic instead of WMP. But the TyShow codec is very iffy -- you might be better off converting the files to MPG and playing with a DVD player like PowerDVD. Or from MPG you can always convert to Divx or somesuch.

dkravan,
I have found MDS_FTP is good for remopving and replacing files in the Tivo.
I find tserver and tytools does a beeter job pulling them down and then converting them to mpg format.
There is infon on the install of tserver in the tytools readme.
It is very simple all you have to do is find it in the readme.
