i bought an extra tivo (series 2) several months ago with prepaid service and was using it fine without any problems.

i just finished buliding a guest house that will not have a phone line or internet access, and i would like to put this extra tivo in there to record shows off the cable feed manually.

i have heard you can do this with the older versions, but not the new versions, which require a constant connection. i tried it and it wants to connect to the tivo system, it won't allow me to do anything, which seems really lame as there is still at least 5 months of service left on it.

is there some way i can do manual recording with this unit? i am comfortable with hardware and software, so any references or guides to information would be great. thanks.

ps: i'm not asking how to steal service, so if you want to reply to that effect don't bother because that is clearly not my intent

You need a phone connection for the S2 models. You could either run a phone line to the guest house or bring the Tivo into the main house and force a daily call every so often to keep the guide data current. You should be able to record whatever is being shown in the guide. If the guest house is on the same circuit as the main house then you could try using a remote phone jack that plugs into an electrical socket. One unit would plug into an outlet in the guest house and the other unit would plug into an outlet and connect to a phone jack inside the house. I don't know what kind of range these things have so that may be a limitation.

I don't know if its possible for the S2s, but when I was first starting out with my S1 I ran across a slice file that (supposedly) pushed a piece of guide data into the Tivo to make it think it had data until 2011 or something.

I never got around to testing/using it, but if you want to give it a shot I'm attaching it.

Let me know if it works, I may have to start looking for a used S2. :D
