For those who don't know (I almost missed it because I don't read the newsletters regularly), TiVo currently has a program that will let you transfer a Series 2 lifetime subscription to a Series 3 TiVo for $199. Its limited time - the web page says you must purchase your Series 3 by 12/31/2006.

I also checked with a rep on the phone, he says that for this deal to apply you must purchase the Series 3 through this link http://www.tivo.com/vip.

Of course, they charge full price there :(, so that would be a pricey $998 for the whole package.

Did TiVo change the terms of the VIP offer again? According to this post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4449580&&#post4449580) you do not have to buy from TiVo.

I spoke with the sales rep on 10-13-2006, so that was after the posts on TivoCommunity. I wouldn't be surprised if the TivoCommunity info was more up to date than what I got from the sales rep though. So he probably didn't get the word. :(

I just transfered the lifetime service from my Philips Series 1 to a Series 3 purchased from TC Store for $680.

I called TiVo's VIP number today and found out that the 12/31/2006 purchase date ONLY applies to TiVO S3's purchased from TiVo.com. If you purchase a S3 from another source, you only have to transfer your lifetime service by 1/31/2007, they don't care when you purchased it. (I had called to ask how I could prove that I had purchased prior to 12/31/2006 from another source.)

What exactly was $680? Surely not the price to transfer. Or are you saying that you can transfer from a series 1 to the series 3 for $199?

The "Transfer Fee" remains at $199 for an eligible S1 or S2 Lifetime subscription to a new S3. Some transfers from very early S1 Philips units may not need to pay the fee at all.

TivoCommunity.com, run by the notorious (around here, anyway) David Bott (whom still blocks forum links from his site to here at DDB), now has a storefront. There's been a recurring coupon code to get $120 off the retail list price bringing the Series-3 box down to $680 plus shipping.

I might add that Amazon.com is currently selling the TCD648250B (Series-3) for $689.99 with free shipping. Other stores reportedly have various discounts as well.

I have found better prices for the series 3 from http://pricegrabber.com The best price keeps changing. Right now it is about $630 delivered, but check reviews as some low cost leaders have bad reviews.

There are reports at TCF that TiVo is now allowing lifetime transfers from DTiVos.

How early? I have a Series 1 HDR112, TiVo SN 000-1349-****-****, Philips SN 2395****.

How do I ask for the free transfer?

The free transfer is not based on the age of Series 1. It is based on when you got the lifetime. Lifetime activated on or before January 21, 2000 has the one-time transfer available at no charge.

I just ordered a series 3 Tivo online for $615, delivered. I forget the exact name of the vendor but it's being shipped FedEx and is scheduled for delivery on Feb 1st.

Here's the link to the Tivo 3 description from PC SuperDeals that has the S3 Tivo for $615 delivered:

Can you further explain what you mean by this? Are you saying that if I have DTivo service and switch to an S3\cablecard that Ican get it as a lifetime aka no monthly fee? I have a DTivo now and am in a quandry as to what to do for HD. Tivo is a near must but S3 ain't cheap and HDDTivo apparently going away. Being able to move to an S3 and tell Direct where to go for having dropped Tivo is appealing, *much* more so if I can get the lifetime!:D

No, what he's saying is that if you're one of the old-time S1 DTivo owners who originally paid Tivo for a "Lifetime" subscription box (instead of DirecTV), that they are apparently allowing transfers to a new S3 unit. Tivo still has a list of folks (or at least box serial numbers) of original DTV buyers, who I am sure they would love to bring back from satellite service now that the DTV agreement is sputtering out.

Keep in mind that the S3 has neither video inputs nor firewire so it is only a cable/OTA box. You won't be able to force it into a satellite setup in any way.

DTV introduced me to Tivo with the HDVR2. I obviously fell in love with Tivo as most of us have. Being curious in the TivoHD, I called Tivo to discuss it. I posed the question of being able to purchase lifetime service on a new TivoHD. The rep looked me up and suprisingly had my info as being an HRVR2 owner and offered me the lifetime service if I bought within the next 2 days (2 days ago). I really wasn't even sure I wanted to buy the TivoHD but knowing I had 30 days return option I went ahead and bit the bullet. I'm pretty excited and looking forward to an "easy" 1TB drive upgrade and my new toy.
Moral to this story, if you're a DTV customer with a Tivo interface satellite box, and are interested in moving to a series 3 Tivo with lifetime service, it is an option, but probably not for long.

A tivo rep pointed me at this page today for an S2->TivoHD lifetime transfer: http://www.tivo.com/hdservicetransfer/ -- $299 for the box, purchased online, + $199 for the transfer. FYI

Just bought a TiVoHD today (2/2/08) at COSTCO for $149.99 ($179.99 - $30 instant rebate). Came home and called TiVo CSR who transfered my lifetime subscription (http://www3.tivo.com/tivo-promo/show.do?pg=/buytivo/hdservicetransfer.html) to the new TiVoHD unit for $199. Offer expires tomorrow, however.
