I see some folks are having problems with slow logins via telnet, and high load with 6.3. I had the same problem and while I'm not exactly sure what the exact cause of the problem is, here's my experience and solution:

I was telnetting in from a DOS/command shell in a Win2k machine, and it was taking a long time (up to 20 seconds) to get the bash prompt (especially when a picture was playing). And when it finally got in, the load was so high that the HD picture was stuttering! HOWEVER, when I telnetted in from an XP machine (same way, command shell) it was fine, logs in in 2 secs, low load. So it had something to do with the telnet via the command shell in Win2k. Could be some telnet configuration in that mode was causing a lot of things to happen in the background. Who knows, some telnet expert can figure it out. Anyway, to get around it on the Win2k machine, I just used Hyperterminal to telnet in instead of the command shell, and everything was fine!

So, if you're having this problem, try it!

high load and slowness can occur on any of the versions esp 6.2 6.3 when it is doing an indexing or garbage collection
