Is there a relatively painless way to reset the USB to 2.0? I have the Linux driver for the fast USB adapter, and it does allow the TIVO to communicate with the PC.

Probably at least a LITTLE information would be helpful. You know, Tivo model, OS version, USB adapter make/model, and what you mean by "resetting" the USB to 2.0.

The unit is a Hughes DVR2-40 (that is of course prior to the HDD being replaced with a 250GB), The drive was prepped with PTVtools and Instantcake 6.2. As for the brand of the USB adapter, I can't find a name to save my life (the driver is rtl8150.o, if that's of any help).

What I'm basically trying to do is upgrade to USB 2.0 for faster transfer speeds when using Tytools. I figure that if an answer is out there, I'm sure that others would benefit by knowing how to "tweak" the drivers to allow best Xfer speeds, given different drivers. I would assume the primary sticking point is getting and installing the driver specific to the USB adapter.

OH!! Sort of like determining who is fastest - just like they do in a soapbox derby?

OK, 'nuf teasing. Jamie has backported drivers (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44114) that support USB 2.0 AND additional speed. As for improving speed, check the soapbox derby thread.

Isn't the rtl8150 a "full speed" (not "high speed") usb device? If so, that means your stuck at usb1.1 speeds (12mbps). Might want to start by getting a usb2 "high speed" network dongle. Something based on one of the Asix ax8* usb2 ethernet chips is a good choice.

IIRC, 6.2 ships with usb2 drivers. If you're using a dongle supported by the stock 6.2 drivers, I'm not sure the backport drivers will be of any benefit. The backport drivers support some additional dongles, including gige dongles, so that might be a reason to switch.

There's some benefit. When I upgraded to 6.2 with stock drivers, I saw a decrease in network performance (compared to 3.1.1e with backport drivers). It wasn't a huge decrease, but enough that I installed the backported ones again. (IIRC, somewhere around 600-800 KBs difference.)
