Anyone created a pair of uPnP apps, client and server, to run on a networked dtivo? I would love to overcome the lack of MRV with a solution that also lets me stream to other uPnP clients (IOData Linkplayer) and lets me stream video, music, and photos from other uPnP servers (Nero MediaHome).
uPnP would even let me view and control my HAI home automation from my tivo screen.

What stream formats do the LinkPlayer and MediaHome output?
Unlike the Xbox (thinking XBMC), the Tivo doesn't really have the horsepower to decode a lot of the 'modern' video file formats. Tivo has a great MPEG-2 decoder, but after that it lacks oopmph.

Tivo as a UPnP server would be a nice way to expose shows to media clients without having to do extractions first. As for a media client, an HME client app that consumed UPnP (maybe a nice addition to MovieLoader?) could work. If you didn't want to take on the additional load on the tivo for UPnP serving, you could always create a UPnP proxy server that exposed the tivo's mfs_ftp as UPnP.
I've found the 'U' in universal to be misleading. For example, XBMC supports UPnP as a client, but SMB seems to work better for most things since it does its own cataloguing and views. It even has it's own streaming protocol and there's a server app for the tivo -- 'ccxstream'. More like PUPnP, 'potentially universal plug-in-play' -- high aspirations, but not huge adoption yet.
What'd really be nice is a good server app that had a pluggable architecture for inputs and outputs plus had the capability to do transcoding on the fly. UPnP inputs and outputs, MFS_FTP inputs, MRV out, etc etc. I'm not sure what kind of impedance mismatches due to streaming differences you might encounter, but it'd sure be nice. TVersity is a nice start, but it is only part of the equation.

linkplayer will play mpeg-2.
nero mediahome can transcode to mpeg-2.

what is the output of 'tserver', 'vserver', or 'mfs_stream' ?
