You need a few things to perform the softmod.


An original Xbox
A Computer (with USB ports)
A programmable Xbox memory card setup (such as the Action Replay thing)
An original game which has been found exploitable for the softmod hack. This includes the first Xbox Splinter Cell game, or 007 Agent Under Fire, or the first MechWarrior game.
The "hacked" linux software for Xbox. This will be in the form of a modified savegame for the whichever exploitable gamedisc you have (above). Look for Krayzie's Installer for your particular game.

The basic method is to get the modded savegame onto the memory card, boot the gamedisc, and load the "Linux" savegame from the game menu (this varies by game). The modified save file overflows the game buffer, which allows for your custom software to begin running on the machine. Krayzie's version handles the entire install process, so softmodding has become very easy.

Be very careful on how you do this. One glitch and you can seriously fsck up your xbox (had to tear my sisters apart due to doing an FTP transfer via Windows Explorer).

I've done the MechInstaller on my sisters Xbox. It was easy as hell (since I copied my progs from my xbox to hers). I would highly suggest UnleashX for a dashboard replacement.

We have 4 Xboxes, 3 with bad DVD-ROM drives. These make awesome networked media centers if you can find one good DVD-ROM drive (or borrow your good Xbox's drive for an hour).
