Maybe some of you saw this: http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/07/amazons-unbox-video-downloads-headed-for-your-tivo/
So I was wondering what the likelyhood of getting it to work on a S2 DTivo was? I am guessing it uses Tivo2Go to make things work so DTivo users are probably SOL.

Not TTG specifically, but this is nevertheless likely going to require 8.x (or, at a minimum, 7.x) software. Probably won't happen for DirecTivos.

I rented a movie from Amazon (to Tivo)...
Since it deletes itself 30 days after you download OR, 24 hours after you begin to play it, whichever is sooner, I thought I might need more time...
But Tivo Desktop nor the TivoToGo would download the movie to the PC (it says its copy protected). Interestingly, Ciphercheck shows that the movie is not encrypted, and CSO set to 'No'.
I was able to transfer it using TyTool, but the resulting .ty file wont play. I also tried opening the .TY file with TyStudio but that fails as well. So it appears as if these downloaded amazon .ty files are not the standard .ty file type. If anyone has any experience with what a normal ty file SHOULD look like. I can do a compare.
BTW, figuring if I could STREAM it to the PC, I could capture and save it, but no luck there either. VLC/Windows Media Player both fail trying to play the streaming movie.
Anyone have any luck with this???

There is an extra level of scrambling going on with unbox recordings. Both the audio & video streams have the PES_scrambling_control bits set on some of their packets. You'll notice that you cannot even re-insert such a recording and have it be playable.
Not that it would seem to matter much - unbox recordings are lower quality than dvds, for which it is trivial to remove the DRM. (By lower quality I mean audio format - mpeg2 instead of ac3, aspect ratio (widescreen movies are not anamorphic), and worse bit rate (about 3Mbit/sec. combined).
All that with a price higher than rentals, a viewing period shorter than rentals, and low selection. Results seems to be a service that makes an interesting headline and not much else at the moment.

...I suspect there is metadata that an mfs_ftp extract/insert isn't preserving that is necessary for playback. For example, the RecordingPartDrm and RecordingDrm object contents.

The movies that can be downloaded from Netflix are also protected (Windows' Play for sure DRM), but can be freed using Mrakagi and the latest hack...
However, since Tivo downloads and plays directly an Amazon movie, I'm guessing that the DRM is different? i.e. they are using some other encryption not based on Microsofts? Is that right?

yes I have been playing with trying to extract /watch one of these.. mfs_ftp with latest patches is unable to exract either a .ty or .tmf
tytools will exract the .ty but it is unplayable..
tytompg fails on trying to convert it
interestingly enought s3tots runs on it and the result plays with no sound and half of the video garbled with coloard blodges.. so you are right there is some extra encryption going on.. would be nice if we could break it..
also the resulting .ts will not .zip or transfer via file copy.. 0 bytes get copied.

if someone wants a copy of the extracted .ty let me know..
