I recently upgrade to the 8. x software. Afterwards, I installed a killhdinitrd'd 3.1.5 kernel, and can boot the TiVo fine. My issue is getting the serial bash. I believe I have added the correct line to my rc.sysinit.author file (attached), but after all the startup logging, I see a prompt for bash but neither Tera Term Pro nor HyperTemrinal can send data (or it doesn't look like it is)...
Thoughts? What dumb step did I leave out?:o
(BTW - I know the log also shows a problem with the usb/network driver. AFter I can get the serial bash back I can tackle that issue next).
My TTP settings are: 115200,8,N,1, no control

first of all, dont edit your rc.sysinit.author in NOTEPAD or WORDPAD. Use a program called Textpad and save as UNIX file format.
Also your rc.sysinit.author is called: rc.sysinit.author.txt
next:
/bin/bash</dev/ttyS2&>/dev/ttyS2&
should be /bin/bash </dev/ttyS2&> /dev/ttyS2&
with the spaces

I will try with the spaces.
BTW...I do edit the files directly with vi on the Tivo box...I only transferred them to my Windows machine so that I can email them up. Also, for some reason I couldn't upload the file named as rc.sysinit.author, so I added the .txt extension to get it up to this board. (I do know some things...just a little bit though ;) )

Durned if I know. I checked your Teraterm bootlog and your rc.sysinit.author. Aside from ncid not being setup, it appears to run fine, and your kernel bootpage settings look fine (including dsscon=true).
Maybe the transmit wire of your serial cable isn't so good anymore.
