Well I just finally after a week of tweaking and trouble shooting pegged a slow upload in mfs_ftp issue to a Linksys USB200M V2 adapter. Had switched out router, cables, connectors, etc, and I guess in the process of thinking of how I can narrow the issue down to 100% certainty I ended up seeing that my adapter is unable to work on the 30 foot length span I had. When I put a powered HUB (with built in amp) at the USB200M location, it took care of the problem by making the operating distnace for the USB200m shorter. I was experiencing none to super slow upload times with USB200m trying to operate over this distance by itself. Download times had always worked well into the 2.5mbs range no matter what. Now I'm wondering if this is an issue that others are experiencing or I have a faulty product. Linksys doesn't have a spec on operating distance, and I suppose it's intended to function at the 10/100 100Meters spec. Or am I wrong and it is meant to only work at a shorter distance. Please feel free to confirm your experiences in distance with the USB200m and mfs_ftp upload transfer rates.

If anyone could shed some light on this I would be much apprectiative. It's possible you may save me a trip for a replacement.

I have a couple of the earlier USB200M units (v1) and they work fine. These have a little 3-inch USB extender cord so as not to strain the USB socket. These are on 40-plus-foot runs to my basement router. "Uploads" to my S2 units are usually limited to around 800kbps to 1Mbps, mainly because that's all the Tivo CPU can handle.

IIRC, receive is on pins 3 and 6. I used to have a 3COM pcmcia laptop card with X-Jack (pop-out) connector which would sometimes give me trouble when the pins got slightly bent and touched each other.

I've also had CAT5 cables which gave out. Usually these were my own hand-made jobs with one or more pins in the connector head which weren't quite true. A little bending or flexing and they stopped working (one was quite hard to troubleshoot).

If you have attenuation on your cable causing signal loss at 30-feet, it might also be substandard CAT5 cable.

For troubleshooting, I'd usually recommend moving the Tivo close to the PC and using a short cross-over cable between them to test out the NIC and the USM200M device. Then test infrastructure.

Thanks for the info. It's a hard issue to pin down. I have replaced cable and connectors with no success. I have used Home Depot and Honeywell Genesis Cat5E. Yet when I use the very same cable/connectors and put a crossover adapter and run it peer to peer (tivo directly to PC). It works perfectly making it seem to be the router. But when I switch it back hooked up to the router, but this time with the powered hub near the Tivo as well, it works perfectly also. It just won't work as intended with a striaght shot to the router and then to PC.

Update: 3/20/2007

Just tried out a new USB200Mv2 that had no physical bent pins visible etc., and that did the trick. I have 2Mbs upload and 2.5Mbs download now with a completed 45 foot span of CAT5e. You pegged it. I just had to find it. Probebly could have taken a closer look at the broken one to check closer what was going on with the pins, but I didn't feel like starting a whole new project after all the cable and connectors I went thru. Drove me nutz. Thanks a bunch NARF. I just needed the right push in the right direction and a verfification of what these adapters were supposed to be capable of.

Thanks
