I have a Phillips DSR704 DirecTV unit on version 6.2-01-2-301 software. The original hard drive died. I purchased a replacement from weaknees (http://www.weaknees.com/). Since this unit is not my primary unit I decided to see what I could find to improve its function.

My goals based on recent research include:
- Copy home movies from PC to Tivo.
- Copy photos from PC to Tivo.
- Learn other uses for this unit.

I am impressed with the look of the Tivo Desktop which does not work with hacked DirecTivo units. I would like to get similar function from another software application.

I performed the following steps.

1. Purchased and installed a new 160Gb drive from weaknees (http://www.weaknees.com) and tested normal tivo functions.

2. Purchased and downloaded a copy of PTVnet (http://www.dvrupgrade.com) from dvrupgrade.

3. Used the instructions on the PTVnet discussion thread (http://www.dvrplayground.com/forum/thread/12068/Official-PTVnet-Software-CD-Instructions-and-Discussion-Thread/) to run the script. This enabled the USB ports on my unit which has enabled use of a wired 10/100 Ethernet-USB network adapter.

4. Added the Tivo to my home network behind my linksys router which provides a DHCP(automatic) IP address. I have tested the function of Telnet, FTP, and Tivoweb(HTTP) to the box.

5. After further reading I decided I needed to install the Tivo Desktop. After installing and "publishing" some MPEG's, MP3s, and photos i realized I was on a wild goose chase.

6. Next I successfully downloaded and applied the superpatch (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43325). This patch has enabled the HMO (Home Media Option) and MRV (Multi Room Viewing) on the Tivo. (Superpatch thread (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43325) had the best instructions of any step I've taken!! Other patch resource (http://www.weethet.nl/english/tivo_dtv2_os6hack_page5.php)).

Now..... I need to take a next step to get some media to view. I have reviewed many posts and would appreciate some clear next steps. I have tried to include as much detail in this posting as to justify a new thread here in the newbie forum.

I am several hours into this quest and I do not believe I have the skills to recover from a mistake.

Tivo Desktop can still be used to serve up JPGs and MP3s to a superpatched DirecTivo. For video uploading, search this site for info about Tivoserver (or mfs_ftp). For video downloading, search this site for info about TyTool or mfs_ftp.

I am using Tivo Desktop 2.4. The Tivo does not automatically or manually find the "server" in the Music and Photos tool. Is there something wrong with my setup? Some trick to making the Tivo find the TD shares? Is there an older version confirmed to work with the superpatched DirecTivo? I will investigate mfs_ftp for upload and download this week.

I'm using Tivo Desktop 2.1. Works perfectly.

I will investigate mfs_ftp for upload and download this week.

You might want to start with Tivoserver for uploading, as it can upload many different video formats. Mfs_ftp requires that the files already be in a Tivo-friendly format.
