I know I will sound like a newbie but I am helping a friend setup a standalone
series two hacked..

I don't have a lot of experience with standalones as I have all dtivos

anyway.. he is going to pay for a subscription.. but also wants to run
tivoserver like I do to mrv movies off of a pc..

I assume you CANNOT block the net call like on the dtivo because this is
how th standalone gets its guide data... and there is the rub.. wont it wipe out the tivoserver/mrv name cert every night when it connects to the mothership.. how to people work around this.. do you create a .tcl script and run it nightly to add it back in.. will that even work without a reboot..

thanks for any info.

... wont it wipe out the tivoserver/mrv name cert every night when it connects to the mothership.. how to people work around this.. do you create a .tcl script and run it nightly to add it back in.. will that even work without a reboot..You don't use a fake group cert on the SA's. You have to have a sub'd unit and a real group cert from TiVo. The superpatch takes care of allowing tivoserver access even though it isn't in the TiVo provided group cert.

I know at one time there was working being done to add the TiVo "GoBack" protocol to tivoserver. This is the protocol Galleon and TiVoDesktop use to deliver content to the tivo. This would allow tivoserver to be used with unhacked SA tivos. I'm not sure what the status is of this work. There are other tools that use this protocol too: pyTivo (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=328459&highlight=Python), TiVo.Net (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=337822&highlight=Python).

Which model standalone?

With a standalone unit, you need the daily call (or USB-Ethernet hookup) to get guide data and sync the Tivo's clock. The MRV name is supplied by whatever he sets at his tivo.com account for that unit. You do not want to use set_mrv_name.tcl with a standalone unit.

Other than that, once he's superpatched you can use tivoserver just like your DTivo.

If he has a later model Tivo, such as a Nightlite unit (TCD540 or 649) then it needs a PROM mod to do any hacks, such as superpatch.

You might also want to look at Tivo.NET (or the Mono version for linux) which is supposed to work with unhacked units.

I have a hacked Standalone 240 model. The reason I hacked my Tivo in the first place, and ditched my old Linux box for a much faster one, was so I could run Tivoserver. It has its shortcomings, but I enjoyed it successfully for about a year. Well unfortunately, in my experience, as of the 8.1 update of the Tivo software Tivoserver is now useless. Unless you don't mind you your Tivo rebooting (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52441&highlight=tivoserver) a few times throughout the course of anything you serve to it from Tivoserver. 8.1a didn't help.

No more Tivoserver was pretty depressing, but fortunately right about the time of 8.1 / the death of Tivoserver, pyTivo and Tivo.Net came out. Jamie linked to them above. They are both awesome!! The Tivo.Net developer has up and vanished though and its pretty much a one man show so Tivo.Net has been stagnant for a while. I'm currently using pyTivo on my Linux box and its just functioning absolutely fantastic. It never crashes, its fast, it just transcodes everything perfectly, transferred files show up at the top of the Now Playing List, its wonderful.

The main developer armoo, is still developing it and he's picked up a couple of very talented detail oriented assistants. They're eradicting every possible little glitch, I love it. There's a recently created wiki for it here (http://pytivo.armooo.net/).

I belive the reboot is due to this issue which was addressed in a latest release of tivowebplus... for 8.1 will see if they can work this into tivoserver..

061226 - December 26th, 2006

Added support for the creating of the DRM object in v8.1 recordings, without this the units will reboot when a recording is attempted.
