I'm thrilled that I have mfs_ftp working and I can download from one machine and insert into another. This is working perfectly except the insert speed is very slow (at least an hour for an hour long show).
How do I go about troubleshooting this?

I have my client (smartFTP) set to Active (I actually can't get passive to even work).

I have mfs_ftp.1.2.9p with mfs_ftp.20070121.patch and mfs_ftp-20070207-pasv-fix.patch and mfs-utils_bin.mips-20050604

I saw a thread that mentioned setting Boot parameters: root=/dev/hda4 runideturbo=false
I wasn't sure how that was related, but I tried changing it, but it did not stick after a reboot.

Any ideas?

If this HD content and this is an HR10-250, that is to be expected. That's about the max transfer speed. There are some tricks... If this is SD content, please disregard.

I have only been testing with SD content so far (content from a HDVR2 moving to a HR10-250)

I haven't played with insertion myself, but the following helps extraction:

1. Try tuning to channels you don't get.
2. Make sure nothing is recording
3. Try "setpri fifo 10 $$", this will give priority to the I/O, but hose the Tivo UI. reboot after.

An HR10-250 will get particularly slow insertion speed when it's tuned to an HD station (or two).

Also, are you using the Jamie's backported USB drivers? In my experience, they didn't help extraction speed too much over the stock drivers, but they significantly sped up insertions.

I was a little nervous about changing out the USB drivers. Would they be better than the ones supplied with the PTVnet versions?
