I hacked my HR10-250 a good while ago, took it up to 750 gigs, been wonderful. It's on verison 3.1.5f - 01-2-357 .
I noticed tonite that it still has the wrong time - 20 I thought that I would let it update and then deal with the aftermath once it did all the upgrades. Ran a phone line to the neighbors (I'm on vonage :( ) and couldn't get the daily call to get past "negotiating..." . same with the test call, same with the "locate local phone numbers" routine. is there a short, succinct path to persuading the dialup to work? A file to edit?
Is there any suggestions on doing an upgrade to the latest on my current system?? And how do I get past the logjam of "negotiating" - is there a setting n a file I need to edit, and if there is, how please? thanks..

you can get a this .tcl file called add63.tcl and upload it to your tivo. Run it and usually by the next morning you will have the new 6.3 software ready for install. No need for a phone connection. Thats what I did.

Typically, failures during the negotiation phase are caused by routes in your /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author (meant to block your unit from contacting home). A phone connection will fail during negotiation as packets normally routed over the ppp are blocked by the routes.

I fixed my friends HR10-250 that had not dialed-in in over a year. He wanted to get the update so I brought it over to my house to let it dial in. Cuz he has Vonage too. Anyway, it was stuck on negotiating forever - so much so that I would just start over and try different things. I found a message on the other forum that says to just let it go, cuz it has not dialed in in a long time. I did and it was on negotiating for hours. I went away and came back and voila, it said pending restart. so the moral of the story - It's not stuck, it's actually working.
Hope this helps.

and THANKS -
I am guessing that once the update has run, I will lose all the hacks?

you can put it in any dir. I have it in /hack/bin dir
just make sure its executable before running it.
You can read my post at:
http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51121&highlight=InstallSw.itcl
so you dont lose your hacks. Only difference is at the
installSw.itcl 6.3a-01-2-357
command you will have to change the 6.3a portion to whatever you received from DTV... it will probably be 6.3c-something

acknowledged - putting on my reading glasses.
This is a fantastic, information-rich environment and I never see any other message board with such humongously long threads to have to read through. My biggest problem is that I don't stay current and fluent on the hacking, and the re-learning curve every year or 3 damn near kills me each time - getting older ain't heppin, neither... :) thanks again.
