Tivo is the BEST damn DVR out there hands down! I been using the day DirecTivo came out.

I had this SD-DVR80 which was the last one at local BB it was a returned and right when they were pushing R10's. I didn't hack it for all those time until last week I decided to go for it.

between ptvupgrade and this forum made my even more kickass device! I can't wait to show it off to DishNetwork 622 touting people!

I have no idea why cable and satellite companies wasting their time brewing their own DVR.

Greed. I mean, its a kick ass device. Everyone loves it.

Question is, did Tivo ask for more (future subscribers) or did Directv think they could do better?

It's a little bit of everything, I suspect.

Greed (Conservatives call it 'Getting a reasonable amount of return from our investments'.)

TiVo has a lot of the technology tied up with patents, but is still trying to make a profit.

DirecTV has been able to add features to the HR20 that STILL aren't available on DirecTiVos.

Theft of service is a big concern, particularly for the satellite services. Any time you use someone else's equipment you wonder if they are actually protecting your interests or just trying to make the right noises to keep you happy.

I suspect a majority of subscribers to cable and satellite services would be happy with any kind of box that could 1. Pause live television and 2. record one channel while they watch another. The possibility that a box would actually keep track of programming changes (i.e. NBC moving one of the Law & Order clones from Saturday night to Monday night) is beyond their comprehension.
