I want to be able to download video from my DirecTivo (running 6.2a) and my HD DirecTivo (HR10-250 running 6.3c) and watch it on my laptop. I have mfs_ftp working, but as I understand it the video is encrypted and thus can only be downloaded in .tmf format.

So my question is -- is there any way to get the decryption key so I can decrypt the .tmf on my laptop and watch the videos I download?

Alternatively, I see posts talking about modifying tivoapp to disable encryption, although I don't see anything specific to 6.3c (I saw 6.2 but not 6.2a). Is this safe to do? If I do it, can I still watch the existing shows that are encrypted (on my Tivo)? I assume future recordings would not be encrypted and I could download them to my laptop and watch them? If so, what format do I use and what viewer?

Thanks -- I am a total newbie to downloading video. Otherwise my Tivos are fairly hacked up.

It doesn't matter what format you download them in if they're encrypted. Tmf format is only needed if you plan on uploading them back to the Tivo using mfs_ftp. You will be unable to do anything with them on your laptop in their current encrypted state. Look for the s2_unscramble thread in the extraction forum for info on how to unscramble recordings made on a series 2 Tivo. Disabling encryption will have no affect on your encrypted recordings. You'll still be able to play them back on the Tivo. I don't watch extracted programs on my PC so I can't help you there except to say that most DVD codecs will play back the files if you mux them to mpg files.

If you look hard enough you'll find the info you need to disable encryption on just about any version of Tivo software released to date, except for the series 3 model.

I would add that TySuiteJ and Tytools are both good at converting .ty files to .mpg, TySuiteJ seems more reliable.
